A Late Gothic portal dating from around 1500 and a Baroque statue from 1713 give Damníkov tangible historical landmarks. At the same time, wooded hills, a stream and the surrounding forests shape the character of the village. For planning a trip, local cultural history and recreation in the countryside offer distinct areas of interest.
Church, Monuments and Mill History
The Church of St John the Baptist is a Neo-Gothic building erected in 1898. It also preserves a Late Gothic portal dating from around 1500 and ornate tombstones from the 16th century. The building, portal and tombstones therefore belong to different periods: the church dates from the late 19th century, while the surviving details preserve earlier layers of history.
Right next to the church is a Baroque rectory dating from 1754. The village is also home to a statue of St John of Nepomuk from 1713. A Baroque statue of St Procopius from 1710 commemorates the former church. The two statues add dated monuments to the buildings; the statue of St Procopius makes an explicit connection to a predecessor building.
The disused Rychtářský mlýn mill is located by the church. Only the massive dam of a reservoir remains. The site also has a history of ownership: the mill originally belonged to the hereditary reeve’s estate; until the 20th century, it was owned by the Zorn family, who usually leased it out. Ownership and use therefore often did not coincide: the family owned the mill but usually let tenants operate it.
Wooded Hills and a Stream
Damníkov lies at the foot of the wooded Hřebečovský range in the Třebovský mezihoří highlands and below the Třebovský Saddle. The Lukovský stream flows through the village and joins the Moravská Sázava. The range and saddle describe the village’s position in the landscape; the stream offers another point of reference, flowing through Damníkov and on to the Moravská Sázava.
The surrounding forests provide recreation for residents and visitors and are suitable for picking mushrooms and blueberries. So, alongside the buildings, outdoor activities are also worth considering. If you enjoy spending time outdoors, you can make forest recreation or foraging a focus of your trip planning.
Routes and Activities for Planning Your Trip
Route 43 runs through Damníkov to Lanškroun, 6 km away, and continues to the recreational areas of the Orlické Mountains and the Polish region of Kłodzko. This road connects nearby Lanškroun with wider-ranging recreational destinations. Marked local cycle routes also intersect in Damníkov. This is a separate point of reference for cyclists: Route 43 leads toward Lanškroun and on to the areas mentioned, while the cycling information concerns the junction in the village.
The Gloserovi riding club offers riding groups as well as riding and show-jumping training for children aged six and over. If you are considering horse riding as part of your trip, this age requirement is a specific point to take into account when making arrangements with a child travelling with you.
When looking for a holiday apartment in Damníkov, you can choose the focus of your stay: historic buildings and monuments, recreation in the surrounding forests, or activities such as cycling and horse riding. This lets you plan your trip around the activities actually mentioned, rather than assuming a fixed itinerary.
