Slatina is shaped in particular by the Church of St Peter and St Paul: it stands on a hill and can be seen from the surrounding area. Other features include a long historic house right beside the church, an orchard and a view of the building from the village of Krátké lány. For orientation, two numbered sections of a cycling route also provide a tangible comparison.

Church and local history

The Church of St Peter and St Paul is a cultural monument of the Czech Republic. Its Romanesque origins date back to the first half of the 13th century. This makes it an important historical landmark in Slatina; its elevated position also connects the history of the building with the village’s landscape.

Right next to the church stands the long house known as U Stratílků. It has been preserved and is well maintained. Its first recorded mention dates to 1610, when it was called Panský hostinec. The year refers to the first recorded mention, not the year the house was built—a useful distinction when placing local history in context.

The Český svaz chovatelů, which has been active in Slatina since 1983, is also part of local cultural and sporting life. Numerous cultural and sporting events take place on its grounds.

Landscape and views

The orchard on the rise near the church continues to contribute to the old-world atmosphere. In addition, numerous dry-grassland species continue to grow on the marlstone in the orchard area. The elevated position, orchard and plant life thus form part of the same landscape, though they are not all the same feature.

A specific viewpoint is also part of the local history: the painter Josef Kubizňák (1909–1990) especially valued the view of the church from the village of Krátké lány, from the slope below the railway line from Choceň to Vysoké Mýto. The named painter and precise viewpoint give the landscape a distinct historical connection.

Cycling route and distances

The “Vysokomýtskou kotlinou na Vraclavský hřbet” cycling route includes two sections connected with Slatina. The Vysoké Mýto–Slatina section follows cycling route 18 and road 3574 and is 3.6 kilometres long. The Slatina–Sruby section is listed as following cycling route 4230 and measuring 1.4 kilometres. At 3.6 kilometres, the section from Vysoké Mýto to Slatina is 2.2 kilometres longer than the one from Slatina to Sruby.
