A 23-metre-high wooden tower, marked trails and churches with different building histories give Horní Čermná clear themes for a stay. The town lies in the foothills of the Orlické Mountains, in a valley formed by the Čermná stream.
Landscape and Views
The Moravská Sázava Natura 2000 site is located within the cadastral area of Horní Čermná. The protected area covers 290.8 hectares. Its protected habitats include ash and alder alluvial forests, as well as beech forests of the Luzulo-Fagetum and Asperulo-Fagetum associations. This also makes the area interesting to travellers who want to explore the landscape and its protected forest communities as well as the buildings.
Mariánka lookout tower is a 23-metre-high wooden tower built in 2014. A steel spiral staircase leads to the observation platform at a height of 18.8 metres. From there, you can see the Orlické Mountains, Suchý vrch, Lanškroun and the surrounding area; on a clear day, the peaks of the Krkonoše Mountains are also visible. The tower is open year-round. Check access before your trip, and bear in mind that visibility can vary when hoping to see distant views.
Hiking and Cycling Trails
The red-marked long-distance Jiráskova cesta trail passes through the cadastral area of Horní Čermná. It is used by hikers in summer and cross-country skiers in winter; snow conditions may vary. A yellow-marked hiking trail leads west from Horní Čermná to the pilgrimage site of Mariánská Hora. Another yellow-marked trail runs through the Sázavské údolí to the summit of Lázek, at an elevation of 714 metres. The trails lead to different destinations: one ends at the pilgrimage site, while the other leads to the summit. Check the trail markings before setting out, as they may change.
Cycling is also covered by a designated route: cycle route 4072 passes through Horní Čermná and connects the town with Dolní Čermná, Petrovice, Bystřec and Čenkovice. If you plan to use this connection, check the route number before setting off. This distinguishes the cycling option from the hiking trails without combining them into a single route.
Churches and Pilgrimage History
The pilgrimage church of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary is located at Mariánská Hora, within the cadastral area of Horní Čermná. The present church building was constructed in 1875. A Way of the Cross with fourteen chapels was built in front of the church in 1886. Pilgrimages to Mariánská Hora have taken place since 1885. They were prohibited during the German occupation; after liberation, they resumed and continue to this day.
The Protestant church in Horní Čermná was built between 1836 and 1839. Its tower was added in 1884–1885. The interior includes an organ made during the First World War, with an older, decorated organ case. The construction dates show that the present church complex was built in more than one phase. The war memorial in Horní Čermná also has its own more recent history: its present design dates from 2018.
Planning Your Stay
Horní Čermná is easy to reach by bus; check the timetable for your travel date. When looking for a holiday apartment, you can start by deciding what you want to focus your stay on: hiking trails and views, churches and pilgrimage history, or a mix of these interests. Check the trails, tower access and seasonal offerings for your planned visit.
Koupaliště Horní Čermná is a former fire-water reservoir now used as a local outdoor swimming pool. If you plan to visit, check in advance whether it will be open on the day of your visit. This keeps the swimming option distinct from the year-round lookout tower and cultural attractions.
