At the Church of St. James the Elder in České Heřmanice, late Gothic portals meet a Baroque remodelling. A signposted cycling route also winds through the rural landscape shaped by ponds; the Borová Educational Trail offers a different perspective, with its own route and learning stations. The village therefore offers several specific points of interest if you would like to explore its architectural history and landscape in different ways.

St. James’s Church and Architectural Heritage

The Church of St. James the Elder is the most important landmark in České Heřmanice. It was remodelled in Baroque style between 1720 and 1733. Two Baroque side chapels extend the space in the front part of the nave. Gothic details have also been preserved: a late Gothic portal dating from 1547 is set into the north wall of the presbytery, and a Gothic portal leading to the sacristy remains in the presbytery’s left wall. The two portals and the later Baroque remodelling reflect different architectural styles and periods.

The granary is also among the municipality’s historically significant buildings. Together with the church, it is another point of interest for anyone interested in České Heřmanice’s architectural heritage.

Borová Educational Trail and Landscape

The Borová Educational Trail begins at a former inn on a country road. From there, the route passes an orchard into the Labičské údolí and continues to two historic underground ice cellars. The trail features information panels, an insect hotel, a learning table and stations for identifying trees. The orchard, valley and ice cellars provide specific landmarks along the route, while the tree stations and learning table add an educational focus.

The signposted cycling route and the educational trail offer different perspectives on the surroundings: the cycling route explores the rural landscape shaped by ponds, while Borová connects landscape features with themed stations. The Fit Trail also has a specific landmark: a tourist rest area is located at the end.

Masopust and the Fair

Masopust, with its traditional pig slaughter feast, is one of the traditional events in České Heřmanice. In 2025, the masked procession was held for the eighth time. For Masopust on 15 February 2025, volunteer firefighters from České Heřmanice prepared a pig slaughter feast. Masopust also includes the symbolic burial of the double bass, which marks the end of the masked procession.

The Staročeský pouťový jarmark is also a traditional event. The 2026 edition featured crafts and good food. The two events have different focuses: Masopust centres on the masked procession and a symbolic closing ritual, while the 2026 fair featured crafts and good food. If you would like to plan your stay around a festival, check the dates for your chosen travel year.
