Riverside Setting and Landscape
The Tichá Orlice flows through the cadastral area of Běstovice. The village lies mainly on the right bank; the settlement of Darebnice is on the left. This places Běstovice and Darebnice geographically on opposite banks. At the same time, the landscape around Běstovice is predominantly flat. The riverside setting and the terrain describe different aspects of the destination: one concerns the layout of the area, while the other describes its general landscape character. If you are interested in historic sites, you can connect this geographical orientation with the archaeological and architectural themes of the village.
Hradiště South of Darebnice
Hradiště lies south of the settlement of Darebnice. Its fortified area covers 1.7 hectares; the rampart is about two metres high, and the ditch is approximately as deep. The area and earthworks describe two scales of the site: its extent and the form of its fortifications. A raised boundary is set against a sunken ditch. This combination of area, rampart, and ditch gives Hradiště its own archaeological profile. It thus differs from the church’s religious architectural history and offers another way to explore Běstovice’s past.
Church and Cemetery
Kostel Všech svatých is a single-nave church of medieval origin. It stands on a high rise above a sand pit, amid an enclosed, circular cemetery. Its architectural form, origins, and location offer different ways to appreciate the building. “Single-nave” describes the church’s basic spatial form, while its medieval origins mark a distinct historical dimension. The church is also considered a landmark of Běstovice. It was restored largely at the community’s expense. The building thus combines its medieval origins and striking location with a later history of restoration.
The Panská sýpka and Its History
The Panská sýpka, a former manorial granary, was built in 1712 and is one of Běstovice’s protected immovable cultural monuments. The year of construction provides a specific historical date, while the granary’s former manorial function sets it apart from the church. These two subjects complement each other in the context of architectural history: a granary once used by the manor and a religious building of medieval origin. Their shared status as cultural monuments brings together different architectural and functional histories within Běstovice.
An Archaeological Perspective
The burial ground in Běstovice also broadens the archaeological perspective. Together with the necropolis in Koldín, it is among the easternmost necropolises in Bohemia. Koldín provides a specific point of comparison; this classification places the sites in a Bohemian context beyond Běstovice. Unlike the church and granary, the focus here is not on architectural form or the year of construction, but on a burial site and its place among the necropolises. Alongside Hradiště, whose area, rampart, and ditch describe the form of a fortification, the burial ground offers a different archaeological perspective. If you would like to make cultural heritage the focus of your trip, you can distinguish between archaeological sites, burial grounds, and architectural history.
