Hejnice U Žamberka brings together ridges, views to the south and the headwaters of the Hejnický potok, along with hiking trails and a long local history. This gives you several practical starting points for planning your trip: you can get to know the area through its landscapes and trails, or focus on historical connections in its districts.
Heights and Views Around Hejnice
At 538 metres, Kozinec marks the eastern boundary of the upper part of Hejnice. Pilátka reaches 520 metres and separates Hejnice from the settlement of Křižánky. The two heights offer different points of reference: Kozinec is closely associated with the upper part of the village, while Pilátka marks the separation from Křižánky.
The views also differ in what they feature. From Humperk, you can look south towards Hejnice. From Kozinec, the hill of Žampach lies to the south, with the ruins of Lanšperk Castle beyond it. The view from Humperk centres on the village, while from Kozinec the hill and castle ruins line up in the same direction.
Headwater Streams, Hiking Trails and Cycling
The Hejnický potok has two headwater streams. One rises near Záleských No. 55, flows through Pustina and feeds a small pond there. The second rises below Smetka, runs through the upper part of the village and joins the first in the village centre. The two streams therefore follow different routes: one passes through Pustina and the other through the upper part of the village before they meet in the centre.
There are several route details for hikers. A route description for “Žamberk – Žampach – Litice nad Orlicí,” updated in 2017, describes the route to Hejnice across fields and through the forest. On the “Cesta Dr. J. S. Gutha-Jarkovského” hiking trail, Hejnice is marked as a reference point after 24 km; the underlying map data was updated on 29 April 2026. The first detail describes the landscape along the way to Hejnice, while the second places the village at a specific kilometre mark on a hiking trail.
Cycling is also represented by a named route: cycle route CT 4072 passes through Hejnice. When choosing your activities, you can therefore distinguish between the hiking routes described above and a cycling route.
Local History and Historical Traces
The first written record of Hejnice dates from the 15th century. In the past, the village belonged to the Žampašské estate. An earlier written record survives for Křižánky, dating from 1376. In 1697, the original farm there was divided into five parts, after which five homesteads were established. These details connect different historical milestones: an early written mention of Křižánky and a specific later change to the farm’s structure.
A different aspect of local history can be found at Vápenka, in the direction of Písečná. This district is associated with the former quarrying of limestone and the burning of lime. The Chapel of Saint Anthony of Padua is in Hejnice and adds a religious building to the area’s historical landmarks.
