Chlebičov combines a location in the rolling Hlučín Hills with archaeological traces, a chapel that shapes the village’s appearance, and opportunities for outdoor activities. The centre lies in a valley hollow formed by the Chlebičov stream. During your stay, you can get to know the village from several perspectives: through its landscape and history, at the park and swimming pool, or along a cycling or pilgrimage route.
Landscape and Village Character
Near the Chapel of Our Lady of the Rosary (Panny Marie Růžencové) is a glacial erratic believed to be a remnant of a vast northern glacier from the Ice Age. Together with the chapel, it is a distinctive landmark in the village: the building shapes the community, while the stone draws attention to the Ice Age. Here, a visible structure and a geological feature meet in one place. If you are interested in the history of the landscape, the erratic adds a tangible connection to the Ice Age to your view of the rolling surroundings.
History from the Bronze Age to the Chapel
Archaeological finds show that the area around Chlebičov was already inhabited in the Bronze Age, around 1800 BC. The first written reference to the village dates from 1250. Another point in its history is the Chapel of Our Lady of the Rosary (Panny Marie Růžencové), which dates from 1895 and shapes the village’s appearance. These three details offer different insights into local history—from early traces of settlement and the first written reference to a prominent building. This allows you to focus your visit on either early history or the village’s present-day character.
Leisure at the Park and Swimming Pool
Chlebičov Park offers green spaces and play and exercise facilities for leisure activities. Its amenities include a circular inline skating track and a place to relax. This offers different ways to take a break outdoors: you can use the circular track to exercise or pause at the rest area. The swimming pool is also one of the leisure facilities and has a beach volleyball court. The park and swimming pool therefore offer different activities, so you can choose how to spend your free time.
Cycling and Pilgrimage Routes through Chlebičov
A cycling route towards Svoboda has a resurfaced path and is suitable for cycling, inline skating and walking. The range of activities listed is a useful guide when choosing how to explore it. Another option for cyclists is the Czech section of Cycling Route No. 552 from Opava to Racibórz. It is 14.00 km long and runs from Opava via Chlebičov, Svoboda and Kobeřice to the Strahovice/Krzanowice border crossing. The route is considered the shortest cycling connection between the partner cities of Opava and Racibórz, and runs away from roads used by motor vehicles.
The Way of St James also passes through Chlebičov. The 276.5 km Moravian-Silesian Route runs from Poland to Austria via Opava and Hradec nad Moravicí to Olomouc, and then on to Brno and Mikulov. You can get a stamp at the municipal office during office hours or by arranging it by phone. The cycling and pilgrimage routes offer different perspectives on the village: Cycling Route No. 552 connects several places along a cross-border section, while the Way of St James places Chlebičov on a longer pilgrimage route.
Culture and Planning Your Visit
Dny obce Chlebičov (Chlebičov Village Days) is also a recurring village festival on the events calendar; the 2019 edition was the fourth. If you would like to plan your stay around the festival, check the date of the edition you wish to attend before travelling. For a visit focused more on history, you can explore early settlement, the first written reference and the chapel as distinct topics. If you would rather focus on outdoor activities, you can choose from the options in the park and the routes mentioned above. This way, you can discover Chlebičov through its local history, outdoor leisure activities or the routes that pass through it, depending on your interests.
