The Parish Church of St Peter and Paul combines Baroque wooden architecture with a special place in the Hlučínsko region: it is the only wooden church in Hlučínsko. The immovable cultural monument was built in 1730 and restored in 1842. It is a concrete point of interest on a trip to Hnevosice if you are interested in church architecture and regional history.

Churches and Architectural History

The church and cemetery grounds are freely accessible, allowing you to take a close look at the monument. A visit inside the wooden building can be arranged by agreement with the municipal office or parish office. If seeing the interior is important to you, arrange your visit in advance with one of the two offices.

Another church building is the Church of Christ the Good Shepherd. It is a prominent architectural landmark in Hněvošice and is visible from the surrounding area. The two churches offer different impressions: the profile of St Peter and Paul is shaped by its wooden construction and documented building history, while Christ the Good Shepherd stands out for its visibility from the surrounding area.

Hněvošický Grove: Nature and History

Hněvošický Grove is also an archaeological site with five visible burial mounds. They originally date from the Bronze Age and later contained Slavic graves from the time of the Great Moravian Empire. The sequence of periods here links a Bronze Age origin with later Slavic use.

As a nature reserve, Hněvošický Grove protects a mosaic of oak-hornbeam forests, acid-loving oak forests, and important plant and animal species of the Carpathian region. Nature enthusiasts will find a different focus here than at the churches: protected forest communities and species of the Carpathian region sit alongside the grove’s archaeological heritage.

Nature Trail and Cycling Route

The Hněvošický Grove nature trail lies within the nature reserve of the same name, between Hněvošice, Služovice and Oldřišov. It is about 3.5 km long and has seven information boards. Its length and the boards provide a concrete framework for planning; check the conditions on site before your visit.

Cycle Route 6095 runs from the Pilszcz/Oldřišov border crossing via Oldřišov, Hněvošice and Vrbka to Svoboda. There it connects to cycle routes 552 Opava–Racibórz and 554 Prajzská cesta. If you are planning a cycling trip, you can take into account both the places along the route and the connecting routes in Svoboda. Check the route using up-to-date cycling maps before setting off.

Planning considerations differ depending on your focus: at St Peter and Paul, an interior visit requires prior arrangement; for the nature trail, its length and information boards provide a framework; and on the cycle route, the route and connections are important. This lets you tailor your stay to architectural history, nature and archaeology, or a cycling connection.
