Metylovice offers a clear introduction to its cultural history: the Church of All Saints is protected as a cultural monument, and the municipal museum “Kožane město” opened in the premises of a former strap workshop. At Čupek, a traditional pilgrimage and a route towards Ondřejník are added to the mix. You can therefore shape your stay around architectural and local history, pilgrimage and outdoor activities.
Church and Local History
The stone Church of All Saints was built in 1577 in the Gothic style on the site of an earlier wooden church and later altered in the Baroque style. In 1653, it was consecrated by Bishop Gobbár of Olomouc. The year of construction and the consecration therefore mark different stages in its history; the Baroque alterations came after it was built. Anyone interested in how a building developed will find several clearly identified historical milestones here, rather than just a single date. The church was consecrated 76 years after the stone building was constructed.
The municipal museum “Kožane město” opened on 7 August 2010. Its premises in a former strap workshop give the museum a connection to local crafts. Metylovice thus brings together different ways of exploring local history: sacred architecture and a museum located in a former workshop.
Another historical perspective focuses on the whip from Metylovice. In the past, it was known beyond the region and the present-day borders of the Czech Republic, and it also became known overseas. This complements the history of buildings and workshops with the object’s former, wider-reaching renown.
Čupek: Pilgrimage and Route
Čupek is a popular pilgrimage site. The traditional pilgrimage takes place on 5 July, the feast day of Saints Cyril and Methodius. If you would like to plan your trip around this date, check the specific programme in advance. This lets you take the tradition’s fixed date into account when planning, without assuming that particular events will take place.
The Metylovice–Ondřejník route runs from Čupek via “Metylovice, kostel” to Ondřejník and Skalka. The route can also be started at the “Metylovice, kostel” bus stop. It is described as moderately difficult and considered suitable for walkers, cyclists and children; conditions may vary by season. Check the current route markings before setting off.
The summit of Čupek can be reached on foot, by bicycle, by kick scooter and with a pushchair. These options give you a sense of how to plan if you want to make the summit your destination. When planning, it is worth distinguishing this access from the route that passes through several places; you should check current trail conditions before setting off.
