Žermanice is a gateway to the Žermanická Reservoir recreation area. This gives the choice of location a clear focal point: water and recreation take centre stage. Other attractions include a wetland habitat in the disused Žermanický quarry, the reconstruction of the Chapel of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary, and the programme at Azyl & FaunaPark Blondies, which is closed until further notice. These themes offer different perspectives: recreational use, habitat, architectural history and animal tours. The closure until further notice is an important consideration for anyone planning a visit to the Faunapark.
Reservoir, Recreation and Cycling Routes
The Žermanická Reservoir was built between 1951 and 1958 and is used for recreational purposes. Its construction therefore has a clear historical context, while its present-day recreational use also shapes the character of the reservoir. Local cycling routes run along its shore in the vicinity of Žermanice. They add an opportunity to explore the surrounding area by bike to a stay by the water. Check the route and conditions before setting off.
A Wetland Habitat in a Disused Quarry
Žermanický quarry is a disused teschenite quarry that is currently flooded and partly filled in. The quarry contains a secondary wetland habitat where protected plant and animal species occur. Numerous amphibians breed in the pools. “Secondary” here describes a habitat that developed after the quarry’s former use. This distinguishes the natural setting of the quarry from the recreational area around the reservoir: the focus at the quarry is on habitat, protected species and the amphibians in the pools.
The Chapel of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary
The reconstruction of the Chapel of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary improved both its technical condition and its appearance. This adds an architectural and cultural point of interest to the nature and water themes. Unlike the reservoir or the wetland habitat, the focus here is a building and the effect of its reconstruction. If you would also like to consider cultural history when planning your trip, you can weigh this aspect alongside the landscape attractions.
Faunapark: Programme and Visitor Status
Azyl & FaunaPark Blondies has been closed until further notice since 1 July 2026 due to illness and construction work. Before planning a visit, check whether it is still closed. The visitor experience described included guided tours lasting 1 to 2 hours, followed by the opportunity to explore the entire Faunapark independently. The programme described also offered, on request, themed tours covering poultry and waterfowl, pheasants, ratites such as ostriches, rabbits, rodents, cattle, horses and sheep, turtles, and small predators such as meerkats, mongooses and raccoons. A trial activity was also planned for children, giving them the chance to try out some of the tasks involved in caring for animals. The park’s status is therefore an important part of planning: the activities described should not be considered currently available while the closure remains in effect.
