A ten-stop nature trail, the Okrouhlá lookout tower and the Kamenná Natural Monument each offer a different perspective on Staříč: local history, landscape and nature observation sit alongside a PumpTrack and mining-related topics. When choosing activities, it is also important to note the difference in visiting conditions. The paved PumpTrack can be used by inline skaters, scooter riders and skateboarders; visits to the Cvičná štola Staříč, by contrast, are reserved for groups of at least ten people and are only possible by prior arrangement.

Nature Trail and Views from Okrouhlá

The Staříč–Okrouhlá Nature Trail was created by ČSOP Onyx for the municipality of Staříč and has ten stops. They cover the present day and history of the municipality, nature conservation and the view from Okrouhlá. Other topics include life in the meadow, pond and forest ecosystems, and the relationship between people and the landscape. Local history and nature topics thus sit side by side along the same trail.

The Okrouhlá lookout tower stands on the 378-metre-high Okrouhlá hill. Its viewing platform is 30 metres above the ground—one figure refers to the hill’s elevation, the other to the platform’s height above the terrain. In clear weather, views extend as far as the Jeseníky Mountains and Javorový. If you plan to visit the tower, check the access conditions beforehand.

There is a car park for ten cars below the hill, serving the lookout tower. Bus passengers can use another car park near the football pitch. As parking and access conditions may change, it is worth checking before setting out.

Kamenná: Protected Nature and Practical Travel Information

The Kamenná Natural Monument covers 2.83 hectares, was designated in 1990 and lies at an elevation of 329 to 354 metres. It is on the northeastern slope of the 385-metre-high Kamenná hill in Staříč, on the site of long-abandoned limestone quarries. Both the protected area and its former use as a quarry shape the distinctive character of this place.

Kamenná is home to heat-loving plants and animals, particularly molluscs, beetles and true bugs. Some species are found here at their northernmost point in northeastern Moravia. For nature enthusiasts, the area’s distinctive wildlife and plant life are as noteworthy as its size.

Kamenná can be reached by suburban bus routes towards Fryčovice and Brušperk. Parking is available at the primary school in Staříč and at the Staříč II mine. Check bus connections and parking conditions before travelling so you can plan your journey around the options available.

Outdoor Activities and Mining History

The paved PumpTrack is located on the football pitch grounds below Okrouhlá. It is not just for bicycles: inline skaters, scooter riders and skateboarders can also use the track. On the enclosed circuit, riders maintain speed over bumps and banked turns by pumping rather than pedalling. This also describes what distinguishes a PumpTrack from a straight track: movement follows the circuit and its shaped features.

Cvičná štola Staříč is a purpose-built underground mine and demonstration tunnel, with a total of 200 metres of underground workings. The standard mining work areas are arranged there using technology as they would be in a real mine. To visit, you must plan for a group of at least ten people and book in advance. Another date in Staříč’s mining history: construction of the Staříč mine began in 1962 as the construction of a coking-coal mine.

The Church of the Finding of the Holy Cross and Its Building History

The Church of the Finding of the Holy Cross was already standing in the 16th century. Its tower was added in 1757; a chapel was built in 1852, and the first organs were installed there in 1896. These dates show several successive changes to the church building, rather than highlighting just one historical moment.

The church stands on the site of a former cemetery, enclosed by a perimeter wall and a sculpted entrance gate. The church complex also includes a Baroque statue of Saint John of Nepomuk. Together, the building’s history, the former cemetery and the statue offer different starting points for exploring Staříč’s cultural heritage.
