Velký Valtinov can be explored through several distinct themes: local history, religious architecture, and routes for hiking and cycling. These include the Lower Castle, Tlustec Fortress, a small manor house in Horní Valtinov, and the Church of St. John of Nepomuk. A green-marked hiking trail and the 30 km Okolo Tlusce circular route pass through Velký Valtinov.
The Lower Castle and its history
The Lower Castle complex in Velký Valtinov lies in the southern part of the village, on a raised terrace above the Panenský potok. In a nationwide Czech comparison, the so-called Lower Castle is among the most valuable complexes of smaller noble residences. However, for planning a visit, it is important to note that the castle has been in a dilapidated state since the 1983 fire and is not open to the public. It is therefore not a publicly accessible sightseeing attraction.
Tlustec Fortress is another historic landmark: construction is dated to the second half of the 14th century. After the fortress lost its original function, it was converted into a granary in the 18th century. Another date to note is 1578, when a small manor house was built in Horní Valtinov.
Church of St. John of Nepomuk
The Church of St. John of Nepomuk was built in 1729 on the road to the castle. Its design is octagonal, or eight-sided, and it is classified as Baroque. Sandstone features in the windows and portal; the portal bears the coat of arms of the Pachta von Rájov family. The building brings together a clearly identifiable form and specific decorative details.
A special detail about the interior furnishings comes from the 1997 restoration: a rare illusionistic altarpiece was discovered during the work. The term “illusionistic” refers to a painted design intended to create an impression of depth. In front of the church is also a Calvary group of five statues of saints. Together, the building’s shape, sandstone elements, portal coat of arms, altarpiece and group of statues offer different aspects to look out for when exploring the church.
Hiking trail or cycling loop
There are two distinct options for getting active in the area: a KČT green-marked hiking trail passes through Velký Valtinov, as does the 30 km Okolo Tlusce cycling loop. For the hiking route, the green trail marking is the specific guide; for the cycling loop, it is the stated distance. You can therefore start by choosing according to your preferred activity, rather than treating the two routes as equivalent options. Check the hiking trail’s marking and route on site before relying on them.
If you are looking for a holiday apartment, you can get a sense of Velký Valtinov through these highlights: history and architecture alongside a hiking trail and a longer cycling loop. When planning your trip, consider whether you are mainly interested in the historic buildings and their different periods, or whether you would like to set aside time for a tour. Because it is not open to the public, the Lower Castle should not be included as an interior sightseeing visit.
