The 696 m-high summit of Ralsko defines the Ralsko Nature Reserve. Its landscape includes rocks and scree slopes, as well as scree forests, mainly beech forests with a lush ground layer. In addition to this natural environment, other natural monuments and historical traces reveal different facets of Ralsko.

Rocks, Forest and Protected Nature

Vranovské skály was designated a natural monument in 1993 and covers 17.92 ha. The rock city, situated on a slope, consists of calcareous sandstone; its most prominent rock is called Juliina vyhlídka. The protected area of Děvín and Ostrý covers 33.1 ha. This natural monument includes tunnels where several bat species hibernate. At 33.1 ha, Děvín and Ostrý is larger in area than Vranovské skály. The natural features also differ: one is a calcareous rock city, while the other protected area includes tunnels where bats hibernate.

Church Art, Castle Ruins and Remembrance

The Church of St Havel in Kuřívody is a single-nave Baroque building dating from 1733–1734. It was created by remodelling an older Gothic church. In 2011, two layers of medieval wall paintings were identified there. The older one depicts a sky with stars and constellations in simple reddish-brown lines. Different periods thus come together in the same building: its Gothic origins, the Baroque remodelling and a medieval pictorial motif.

Stohánek preserves the remains of a castle built on an isolated rock. Access is via a steep staircase; take this into account when planning your visit. The rocky setting and the castle ruins together define the site.

In Kuřívody, the sandstone sculpture “Zapomenutý domov” commemorates the vanished villages of Ralsko. Its theme of remembrance adds a distinct note alongside the architectural and painted evidence: here, the focus is on the former villages. The sculpture thus complements the church’s architectural history and the castle ruins with another cultural and historical perspective.

Cycling Routes with Different Planning Details

The educational trail “BITVY 1866 U KUŘÍVOD A MNICHOVA HRADIŠTĚ” is also suitable for cyclists. Cycling Route No. 7 is 27.1 km long, suitable for trekking bikes and mountain bikes, and starts and ends in Kuřívody. The information provides different kinds of guidance: the educational trail is described as suitable for cyclists, while Route No. 7 also has a specified length, start and end point, and suitable bike types. When choosing between the educational trail and the cycling route, you can take the features described for each into account in your plans.
