Chlum U Dubé offers insights into several layers of history: at St. George’s Church, you can distinguish its ecclesiastical history, present-day appearance and a later change of tower. Former stoneware production and apricot growing add crafts and agriculture to the local history. When planning a trip, you can also consider hiking destinations in the areas around Chlum and Maršovice, as well as a bus connection to Chlum.
St. George’s Church and its construction history
The church’s history dates back to 1293, when the church in Chlum was separated from the parish of Bezděz and given its own priest. St. George’s Church acquired its present-day appearance in 1739, when Count Jan Kounic had it built. In 1863, the church received a new tower with a bell frame made of sandstone blocks. This new tower replaced the older, dilapidated wooden tower. The bell frame is the structure from which the bells are hung; here, it was made of sandstone blocks. The dates mark different developments: 1293 for ecclesiastical independence, 1739 for the present-day appearance and 1863 for the change of tower. In the municipal planning documentation updated in 2024, St. George’s is listed as an immovable cultural monument.
Former industries and agriculture
There used to be a stoneware factory near the village of Chlum. Apricots were also once grown on a larger scale in Chlum and the surrounding area. These two traces belong to different aspects of local history: the factory represents stoneware production, while the orchards represent agricultural use. Stoneware production and apricot growing thus complement the building history with two different aspects of work in the past.
