A stay in Hamr Na Jezeře can be shaped around water, history or outdoor activities. Hamerské jezero, the ruins of Děvín Castle, a local circular trail and the second stage of the Ploučnice Cycle Route each offer a different focus.

Hamerské jezero and water sports

Hamerské jezero is considered a popular and attractive fishing spot. If you plan to fish, check the current regulations in advance, as fishing rules may change. The lake is fed by a branch of the Ploučnice called Hamerská strouha. At Sportovní areál Pláž, there is a 230-metre-long sandy beach in a pine park. Boats and pedal boats are available for hire there; this service may be seasonal. The fishing spot is Hamerské jezero; the beach and boat hire are part of Sportovní areál Pláž.

Děvín Castle and local history

The ruins of Děvín Castle, dating from the 13th century, lie south of Hamr Na Jezeře, on the far side of Hamerské jezero. The castle was founded before 1250 by the Markvartici family. In the 16th century, Hamr had a mill on the Ploučnice and several ironworks. Limonite mined at nearby Děvín and in its surroundings was processed there. Děvín is therefore associated with two things: the castle site and the nearby source of the limonite used in ironworking.

The neo-Gothic Chapel of Our Lady Help of Christians (Panny Marie Pomocnice křesťanů) stands on Křížový vrch above Hamr. Its neo-Gothic style sets it apart architecturally from the medieval castle ruins. At the end of the 19th century, Hamr Na Jezeře became a popular spa resort. The historical timeline runs from the castle’s founding before 1250, through ironworking in the 16th century, to the town’s status as a spa resort at the end of the 19th century.

Circular trail or cycling route

The Hamerský circuit is a 9-kilometre circular trail through the area around Hamr Na Jezeře. The second stage of the Ploučnice Cycle Route starts in Hamr Na Jezeře and leads to Stráž pod Ralskem and Mimoň. You can decide whether to focus on a circular tour of the surrounding area or on the stage and its named destinations. The Ploučnice Cycle Route is signposted as cycle route number 15 and runs from the source of the Ploučnice at the foot of Ještěd to the river’s confluence with the Elbe in Děčín. These endpoints put the route in context beyond the individual stage. As the route may change, it is advisable to check the current route before setting off.

The name Ploučnice thus appears both in the name of the branch that feeds Hamerské jezero and in the name of the cycle route. It connects the area’s water history with route planning without conflating the different types of tour.
