Two cycling routes, a geologically remarkable site, and historic buildings and memorials give Tachov its distinctive character. If you are looking for a holiday apartment in Tachov, you can plan your stay around interests such as cycling, the landscape, and local history. The surrounding area is suitable for hiking and cycling trips, while the town itself has traces of culture from several periods.
Cycling Routes and Hiking Plans
The long-distance cycling route No. 25 passes through Tachov between Doksy and Dubá. Local cycling route No. 0015 runs from Dolní Houska via Ždírec and Tachov to Doksy. Doksy and Dubá are listed as connecting points on route No. 25; route No. 0015 describes a sequence from Dolní Houska through several places to Doksy. The two routes can therefore be distinguished by the places named along them. Signage may change over time, so check the route before setting out.
Hiking has a different starting point: no marked hiking trail passes through Tachov, although the surrounding area is suitable for walking trips. Plan with the routes outside the town in mind. Since trail networks may change, it is a good idea to check the local routes before a hike.
Landscape and Geology
Tachov lies at the foot of Tachovský kopec in a gently hilly landscape. At Tachovský vrch, an active quarry exposed the contact between Permian ignimbrite and Tertiary phonolite. The outcrop thus shows the boundary between two different rocks assigned to different geological periods. Tachovský vrch is of geotourism interest.
The geological site can be reached by car without traffic restrictions. Before visiting quarry areas, check the local access conditions, which may change. This allows you to take an interest in the geology into account when planning, without assuming that a visit to a quarry area is necessarily possible.
Architectural History and Memorials
The oldest recorded mention of Tachov dates from 1392. The Baroque chapel was built between 1793 and 1794 and is a protected cultural monument. Another protected historic building is the former half-timbered schoolhouse, No. 38, dating from 1787. The chapel and the former school represent different types of buildings in Tachov’s local history.
The First World War memorial consists of a sandstone plinth and a life-sized angel figure holding a laurel wreath in its hands. Wayside shrines stand along the roads from Tachov to Ždírec and Okna. The shrine on the road to Ždírec is made of sandstone; its niche contains a painted image of the Holy Trinity, complemented by a metal cross. Another cross stands behind the municipality, beside an old field track running from Tachov towards Zbyn.
Nature and Local Traces
The Lípa v Tachově is a protected individual tree, first placed under protection on 9 December 1994. Agriculture is also part of local history: the so-called Dubský zelený chmel was traditionally grown in Tachov.
There is a rest area with a shelter in the centre of Tachov. Check its condition on site before using it.
