Vysoká nad Labem can be explored through two very different themes: the flat Elbe Trail between the village and Smiřice, and the history of the Opatovice Canal and local memorial sites. This is a useful distinction when choosing where to stay: you can focus on the cycling route and riverside scenery, or on construction and commemorative history. Both themes lead to specific places and clear historical details.

Cycling route, riverside scenery and Milíř

Vysoká nad Labem is on the Elbe Trail cycling route. The section between Vysoká nad Labem and Smiřice is flat and offers views of the river, peaceful nature and the confluence of the Elbe and Orlice rivers. The landscape around Vysoká nad Labem combines mixed and pine forests with the Elbe floodplain. This means you can choose between a flat route along the river and the varied landscape of the surrounding area.

Another point of elevation is Milíř Hill: at 284.5 metres above sea level, it is the highest point in the surrounding area. The Milíř lookout tower is 31 metres tall, and its hexagonal viewing platform is 27 metres above the ground. The tower is closed until further notice because of its technical condition. Check its current status before travelling.

Canal history and memorial sites

The Opatovice Canal at Opatovický splav was built in 1513 and is 35 kilometres long. Over time, 32 mills were built along it. Its length indicates the extent of the waterworks, while the number of mills reveals another aspect of the canal’s history. Together, these details offer insight into both the structure itself and its history of use.

A memorial plaque in Vysoká nad Labem commemorates the parachute group BARIUM’s landing on 3 April 1944. It was unveiled on 17 October 1993. In addition, a monument funded by the municipality was erected at the site of the tragedy in 1947; the events are regularly commemorated there. The plaque and monument highlight different aspects of local history and provide specific dates to place the events in context.

Getting there and the sports complex

MHD bus routes 18 and 20 connect Vysoká nad Labem with Hradec Králové. The Milíř lookout tower is about 200 metres from the Vysoká nad Labem terminus. As bus routes and timetables may change, check your connection before travelling. This lets you plan your journey without relying on a particular travel time or service frequency.

The Vysoká nad Labem sports complex includes a grass football pitch, a beach volleyball court, a skatepark and a workout area. Use of the sports facilities is subject to a fee; reservations are made electronically. As facilities, prices and booking procedures may change, check the details before your visit. The village therefore offers several clearly distinct options to choose from: cycling along the Elbe Trail, visiting historical sites and using the sports complex.
