Kosičky lies northeast of Chlumec nad Cidlinou, on the right bank of the Bystřice. Two distinctive ways to explore the place are the landscape around Třesický Pond and traces of local history, from a historic coin hoard to agricultural architecture. This combination gives your travel decision a clear direction if you want to take nature observation and history equally into account.

At Třesický Pond: Water and Bird Habitats

Třesický Pond covers 70 hectares and was created before 1467. Its natural value can be described more precisely than simply calling it a large body of water: refuge areas with diverse waterside vegetation have been preserved in the southern to western part. They provide habitat for several specially protected bird species. The meadows around the pond are regular nesting grounds for the critically endangered black-tailed godwit (Limosa limosa) and corn bunting (Miliaria calandra). The waterside areas and meadows thus represent different habitats. For nature enthusiasts, the focus is not only on the water, but also on the vegetation along the shore and the surrounding nesting meadows.

Local History in Tangible Traces

The year 1936 provides a precise point of reference: during repairs to an open gallery, a hoard of 171 coins was found in Kosičky. They date from the time of George of Poděbrady and Vladislaus II. The find connects a specific building project with a historical trace and coins from two rulers’ reigns.

Farmstead No. 46 also tells the story of the village’s architectural history. It is a well-preserved, high-quality example of a small agricultural farmstead from the second half of the 19th century. It was further altered at the beginning of the 20th century and survives as a coherent ensemble with a uniform façade design. The interplay between later changes and its cohesive appearance makes it an illuminating example of rural architecture.

Mills and an Accessible Spring

Until the end of the 19th century, three wooden mills stood on the Bystřice in Kosičky: Divoký, Na hrázi and U mostku. According to tradition, Hrázka in Luhy is the last surviving mill on the Bystřice. These accounts lead from a former mill landscape to a building said to have survived, preserving different layers of the village’s history.

Another historical trace leads to the former site of the Svatojánské lázně. A spring there is still accessible. It offers a tangible point of interest during your stay, alongside the pond landscape and historic buildings.

Planning a Described Route

A route described for weekdays from Kosičky via the Písníky and Třesický Pond to Obědovice is 7.7 kilometres long. The route plan included bus connections from Hradec Králové to Kosičky or Písník at around 6:50 and 11:20, as well as a connection via Chlumec nad Cidlinou at 9:40. Return journeys from Obědovice to Hradec Králové were listed at 15:18, 16:10 and 17:10. Check current timetables before planning to use these connections for your trip.

When looking for a holiday apartment, you can decide which aspect matters most to you: the pond and nesting meadows offer a connection with nature, while the coin hoard, mills and farmstead offer historical traces. This makes it easier to choose Kosičky based on which of these two sides interests you more on your trip.
