Stračov is a destination for travellers who want to explore built history and landscape as distinct points of interest. The Church of St James the Greater shapes the village’s appearance, while Stračov Château adds another architectural layer. To the south lies the Stračovský Bor woodland complex, which also contains an archaeological burial ground. When choosing where to stay, you can consider whether you are more interested in architecture, archaeological context, woodland scenery or community events.

Church and château: two architectural periods

The Church of St James the Greater is Stračov’s defining landmark. On its western side stands a tall, three-storey, prismatic tower with a portal serving as the entrance. The combination of its position, tower shape and number of storeys gives the building a clear architectural structure. The church’s history also includes a specific community initiative: it was restored in 1997–1998 through cooperation between the municipality and the church. This landmark therefore offers two distinct ways to explore local history: its architectural form and a restoration project with a specific date.

Stračov Château is located on the western side of the village square. It is an authentically preserved country château, with Neoclassical alterations and an older Baroque core dating from the 18th century. The core and Neoclassical alterations represent different architectural periods within the same building. Since 2004, the château has been protected as a cultural monument. This provides a different emphasis from the church: the château is defined by its historic fabric and protected status, while the church is also characterised by its restoration history.

Woodland landscape and archaeological history

Stračovský Bor is an extensive woodland complex south of Stračov. Its highest point is 295.7 m above sea level and is one of the highest points of the Nechanická tabule. This elevation gives the woodland a specific connection to the regional landscape. The Stračovský Bor burial mound site, Mohylník Stračovský Bor, is also located in the forest southwest of the village. It is a burial ground and is classified as a significant archaeological site in category ÚAN I. The site is associated with prehistory, the Věteřov culture, the Lusatian culture, and the Early Middle Ages 1 and 3. This part of Stračov therefore brings together an extensive natural area and a clearly identified archaeological site connected to several periods and cultures. Those interested in cultural heritage will find an archaeological point of interest here, alongside the architectural history of the church and château.

Walks and events

Recurring activities in Stračov include long-distance walks for all age groups. They have been held for several years at the end of the summer holidays and attract broad public participation. The local volunteer fire brigade also organises popular events in Stračov’s natural area. These community occasions add a seasonal focus to the village’s enduring cultural and landscape attractions. If a walk or one of these events is the reason for your trip, check the date for the relevant year in advance.
