An unusually large medieval village square with a rectangular layout gives Nepolisy a distinctive focal point. The Church of St Mary Magdalene is a landmark visible from afar; there are also individual monuments and traces of the town’s history. If you are looking for a holiday rental in Nepolisy, local history, built heritage and cycling can offer different ways to shape your stay.
Village Square, Church and Memorials
The village square combines its rectangular medieval form with an unusual size. Numerous lime trees and horse chestnuts bloom there in May and June; the intensity of the bloom varies from year to year. These months therefore provide a seasonal indication if you would like to see the trees in bloom. The Roman Catholic Church of St Mary Magdalene is a landmark visible from afar in Nepolisy and was reconstructed in 1998.
Several monuments can also be distinguished by their locations: the Boží kříž stands in the park by the church, the statue of St John of Nepomuk by the lower pond, and the statue of Panny Marie Boží by the middle pond. Check the current condition of these objects before visiting. This way, you can take their locations into account when planning your visit without confusing the three sites.
Early Settlement and Local History
The earliest evidence of settlement in the area around Nepolisy dates from the 1st to the 4th century AD. The first surviving written mention of the town came much later: it dates from 1299, when Nepolisy was called Lepolisy. These two details refer to different historical milestones: one points to early settlement in the area around the town, the other to a recorded place name.
Archaeological finds discovered in 1904 in a field behind the local cemetery are kept at the museum in Nový Bydžov. If you plan to visit the museum, check visiting arrangements separately. Another historical point of interest is the former fortress of Nepolisy: in 1513 it was uninhabited and subsequently fell gradually into ruin.
The privately owned Vila Černých is the birthplace of JUDr. Josef Černý, Interior Minister of the First Czechoslovak Republic. The villa’s original exterior appearance was preserved during its reconstruction. Nepolisy thus brings together different historical themes: early settlement, the town’s development, a political career and the preserved exterior of a private building.
Cycling in Nepolisy
A marked cycle route running through Nepolisy connects Chlumec nad Cidlinou with Nový Bydžov. This gives cycling a clear connection to the town and to two named destinations. Check the signage and route conditions again before setting off. The route is a specific consideration when planning your trip if you would like to explore Nepolisy as part of a cycling tour.
A separate historical date related to cycling is 15 August 2020: on that day, the 25th edition of the “Nepoliská stovka” cycling event took place. The marked cycle route and this event date offer different points of interest for cycling enthusiasts: one describes a route through Nepolisy, the other a specific edition of an event. If the event is important to your trip, check the dates for your travel period separately.
