Máslojedy is part of the Mikroregion obcí památkové zóny 1866; several themed routes also include the village and its surroundings. This gives a stay a clear focus: remembrance of the year 1866, complemented by a much older local history. The routes differ in their course and the places they include. When choosing Máslojedy for a trip, you can first decide whether a monument, a route through several municipalities, or the Svíb forest will be the focus of your historical visit.
The first written record of Máslojedy dates from 1241. At that time, the village belonged to the Prussian Knights of the Cross. This early written record sets a historical point of reference that reaches far back before the events of 1866. Both periods therefore form part of the different historical perspectives that come together in Máslojedy and its surroundings.
Memorial Sites and Traces of 1866
The IR 47 + FJB 20 monument stands on the eastern side of Svíb, about 100 metres below the access path. It is a limestone pyramid on a pedestal, with inscriptions in Czech and German. At this memorial site, both its specific design and its bilingual inscription take centre stage: the monument can be considered a built object in its own right, not merely a name on a route.
At the western edge of Máslojedy, the Špriňarův statek bears traces of cannonballs from the battle of 3 July 1866 on both gables. During the battle, the headquarters of the Austrian IV Army Corps was located in the field between the farm and Svíb forest. The history of the battle is thus linked here to a building and the field between the farm and the forest.
The military cemetery is also precisely located: it lies in the northwestern part of the municipality, on the road towards Hořiněves. Together with the monument and the Špriňarův statek, it provides another point of reference for the municipality's history. Its location can be considered separately from the routes that place Máslojedy in a broader context.
Hiking Routes with Different Courses
Marked hiking route 115 runs from Všestary railway station via Svíb and Máslojedy to Hořiněves railway station. Its description therefore names railway stations at both ends and two places along the way. The route provides a connection between several named points and is not limited to the monument or the village of Máslojedy alone.
The Josefov–Smiřice–Chlum 1866 educational trail passes through Josefov, Smiřice, Hořiněves, Máslojedy, and Chlum. It therefore offers a different sequence of place names from route 115, which runs between Všestary and Hořiněves railway stations via Svíb and Máslojedy. When comparing the routes, you can focus on the places named and the course of each route, rather than assuming they are the same trail.
The Les Svíb educational trail takes visitors into Svíb forest and the surroundings of the municipalities of Čistěves and Máslojedy. The bloodiest part of the Austro-Prussian War took place there in 1866. This route thus focuses on the forest and its historical setting, while the descriptions of the other two routes list a sequence of several places.
The names and routes help distinguish the different historical connections of the area and plan your trip accordingly.
