Hořiněves combines a clearly defined cultural theme with architectural and natural history. The Václav Hanka Memorial House explores the life and work of Václav Hanka; the Church of Saint Procopius, Hořiněves Chateau and memorials to 1866 add to the historical picture. Outdoors, the protected memorial lime trees and the Hořiněvská Bažantnice nature trail offer a different perspective. When choosing a place to stay, it is therefore helpful to consider not only which sights to visit, but also whether you would rather focus on exhibitions and architecture or on nature.

Václav Hanka: Exhibition and Wooden Architecture

The Václav Hanka Memorial House features a permanent exhibition of photographs and documents about Václav Hanka’s life and work. The building itself is a fine example of a wooden folk building dating from 1720. The memorial house thus brings together two distinct themes: the exhibition focuses on a person and his work, while the building’s design offers its own way into history. Tours with commentary must always be booked in advance. If you plan to join one, arrange your reservation before travelling.

Church, Chateau and the Memory of 1866

The present-day Church of Saint Procopius in Hořiněves is a Baroque church built in 1707 on the site of an earlier church. Cannonballs are embedded in its walls. Graves and monuments near the church commemorate the battles of the Austro-Prussian War of 1866. Hořiněves Chateau acquired its fully Baroque appearance during a renovation from 1674 to 1676. Comparing the dates makes the different building phases clear: the chateau renovation predates the construction of the present-day church in 1707, which stands on the site of an earlier church.

Memorial Lime Trees and Nature Trail

The protected Hořiněves memorial lime trees are estimated to be more than 500 years old. In May 2026, access was via a local dirt track: from the former water tower, turn left and continue for about 200 metres. Check access before your visit. At the Hořiněvská Bažantnice nature trail, a different point matters: following a natural disaster in 2025, most of the interactive and information panels were damaged and removed from the forest. The woodland section was passable in May 2026. The missing panels and whether the route is passable are separate considerations; also check the trail conditions before your visit.

A Named Route as Another Option

The “Z Hořiněvsi do Čištěvsi” route starts at Václav Hanka’s birthplace in Hořiněves. Its name describes the route from Hořiněves to Čištěves, while its specific starting point is the birthplace. This offers a different approach to planning your trip from visiting individual historic sites: you can follow a named route rather than choosing your stay solely around buildings and memorial sites.

What You Can Plan Ahead

When preparing, the cultural and nature attractions differ in one practical respect: tours at the memorial house must be booked in advance, while conditions on the paths to the memorial lime trees and along the nature trail should be taken into account. You can plan accordingly, depending on whether you want to include a tour that requires a reservation or make your outdoor visit subject to the conditions at each location.
