There are three distinct reasons to visit Popovičky: the architectural history of the Church of St Bartholomew, a cycling tour following the Ringhoffer family’s footsteps, and the municipality’s events. You can first decide whether historic buildings, a themed cycling route or a particular event date is the deciding factor. The cycling tour extends beyond Popovičky and can therefore be considered a standalone travel component spanning several destinations.
Church and Rectory
The protected complex listed in the national heritage register comprises the church, an ossuary, an enclosing wall and two gates. The church was remodelled and extended between 1731 and 1736 at the instigation of parish priest Jan Antonín Horník. An ossuary is used to store human bones; here, it forms part of the protected complex alongside the church.
The rectory in Popovičky preserves traces of its original painted decoration and has a cosy attic apartment. This offers a different perspective on the local architecture from the church’s remodelling: the focus here is on the interior and attic.
Local History and Events
Next to the municipal office, by the Lidická pear tree, an information panel installation covers the Heydrichiáda. This offers a clearly defined historical remembrance theme alongside the architectural history.
Popular events in the municipality of Popovičky include activities for children and adults, children’s days, Huntovické lávky, dances, a lantern procession and various sports competitions. These offer a different reason to visit from the permanent architectural and historical attractions. If you are planning your trip around a particular event, check its date in advance so you can plan your stay around the programme item you want to attend.
Cycling Tour Following in the Ringhoffer Family’s Footsteps
The cycling tour continues from Popovičky through Předboř and Velké Popovice to the modern Velkopopovický Kozel brewery. The Ringhoffer family provides the tour’s theme. The brewery offers guided tours covering the history of brewing, production, the Ringhoffer family and present-day operations. The route and the tour are two distinct travel components: one passes through several of the places mentioned, while the other explores topics related to the brewery in greater depth. If a guided tour is essential to your plans, check its availability in advance.
Practical Route-Planning Note
According to a municipal notice dated 1 June 2026, the Pod Skalkou pedestrian bridge over the Chomutovický potok is closed because of its poor condition; a complete reconstruction is being coordinated with the building authority. Check the crossing’s status before your visit. If your route includes this bridge, take the notice into account and do not assume the crossing will be available.
