Horoušany is arranged around a pond; protected monuments and recurring events also shape the village’s character. When choosing when to visit, you can focus on either the landmarks of local history or a date that coincides with one of the annual festivals. Horoušanský Pond adds a water-related aspect to these impressions. You can thus match your search for a holiday apartment to your own interests in culture, water or event dates.

Village Square and Architectural Monuments

On the village square in the centre, a stone bell-tower chapel and a cast-iron cross on a stone plinth form an ensemble; both are protected monuments. The rectangular, masonry chapel dates from the 19th century and effectively forms the centre of the community. It is therefore both an architectural landmark and an important point of reference in the village centre.

A sandstone cross on a tall plinth also stands on the roughly triangular village square. It bears a carved depiction of Christ and is dated 1812; as an immovable cultural monument, it is protected. A Latin cross with a relief of the Crucifixion stands at the top. A scroll bears the engraved inscription “INRI”.

Traces of Local History

The Šámal farmstead, house number 22 on Baumanova Street near the former school, is considered one of the most interesting surviving examples of Horoušany’s original buildings. A commemorative plaque there recalls Otakar Šámal, who was murdered by the Nazis in 1942. The site thus connects a surviving building with the memory of a specific person and historical event.

At the junction of Baumanova and U Mlýna, a memorial stone with a plaque commemorates Břetislav Bauman and his wife Emílie. The building below it is a former barn belonging to mill farmstead No. 11. The couple lived and worked there before and during the Second World War; Břetislav Bauman was arrested at this site by the Gestapo on 15 July 1942. The original mill was demolished in the 20th century. The memorial thus preserves both the story of the couple and the site’s former connection to the mill farmstead.

Pond, Streams and Village Layout

Horoušany lies at an elevation of 216 metres, where the Horoušanský and Jirenský streams meet. The village is arranged around a pond, whose right bank shapes the village centre. North of the former manor farm is a second village square with a children’s playground, a fountain and large willows. These details show different aspects of the village layout: its relationship to the pond and another square with its defining features.

Horoušanský Pond lies in the heart of the municipality of Horoušany in the Praha-východ District, also at an elevation of 216 metres, and covers 2.8 hectares. It is currently used mainly for sport fishing, under a “catch and release” policy. If you plan to fish there, check the local conditions and permits beforehand. Above Horoušany, some wetlands and reed beds remain along the Jirenský stream. Thus, fishing is the main activity associated with the pond, while the wetlands and reed beds described above are the notable features along the stream.

Events Throughout the Year

The “Hudební slavnosti obce Horoušany” (Horoušany Municipal Music Festival) traditionally takes place once a year as a one-day event in the first half of June at U Parku. The “Letní kino” (Summer Cinema) is also held there annually in the second half of June. Another open-air cinema event, “Letní kino (rozloučení s prázdninami)” (Summer Cinema: Farewell to the Holidays), is scheduled for the second half of August, also at U Parku. The “Pivní slavnosti” (Beer Festival) is a traditional one-day event in the second half of July; it is held in the garden of the A. Basař Municipal Inn.

The “Sportovní den” (Sports Day) takes place once a year as a traditional one-day event in the first half of September near the multi-purpose sports ground.
