The Oplanka stream flows through Oplany from north to south, and its winding valley connects the village landscape with a history of water, agriculture, and maps. The village is also home to the Chapel of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, built in 1849, and Cycling Circuit 4/B, which includes the village on a route of about 25 kilometres. Choosing Oplany lets you focus on different aspects of the area, from its landscape and historical traces to its cycling route.

Oplany in the Oplanský Potok Valley

Oplany is in the Central Bohemian Region, 8 kilometres south of Kostelec nad Černými lesy. The village lies in the Oplanský Potok valley, among mixed forests. Its average elevation is 360 metres, and its cadastral area covers 580 hectares. These details describe the municipality’s location and landscape setting.

The Oplanka stream, also called the Oplanský Potok, flows through Oplany from north to south. Its course winds through a valley between meadows and wooded slopes. Near Rovné, the Oplanka flows into the Jevanský Potok; from there, the water continues into the Sázava. The stream can thus be seen both as a defining feature of the village and as part of a larger river system.

Náramka and Local History

The Náramka spring lies on the Oplanka stream in the direction of Stříbrná Skalice and is still preserved today. In summer, local farmers once used it when there was not enough water for livestock in the village. This use points to the spring’s practical role in agriculture at the time. Another historical reference is its marking on Austrian military maps used in the 1866 war between Austria and Prussia.

These two references tell different aspects of its history: its earlier use concerned the water supply for livestock, while its map marking places the spring in the context of the 1866 war. Náramka thus brings into view both the local use of water and the historical depiction of the spring.

The Chapel of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary

Another link to local history is the Chapel of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary. It is a historic building in Oplany and dates from 1849. It was consecrated on 15 August of that same year. The year it was built and the exact date of its consecration provide two different dates relating to this named building. While Náramka is connected with the stream and the former water supply, the chapel offers an architectural link to the village’s history.

Cycling Circuit and Events

Cycling Circuit 4/B places Oplany within a wider area: it is about 25 kilometres long and runs from Sázava via Nechyba, Benátky, Oplany, Hradec, and Stříbrná Skalice, returning to Sázava. The distance refers to the entire route; Oplany lies along it, while the starting point and return are in Sázava. The route is part of the official cycling tourism network of the town of Sázava.

Competitions are also among the village’s recurring events. The KolOplan cycling competition has been held repeatedly; announcements were made for 2018, 2024, and 2025. The Oplanská Bloudička orienteering event took place on 16 September 2017 and 15 June 2019. If you want a competition to shape your travel plans, check the latest dates in advance.
