Žernovka combines a local history shaped by stonemasonry with named places of remembrance and specific route information. The village was founded as a stonemasons’ village; granite is still quarried in some local quarries. The NS Mukařov-Žernovka nature trail and cycle route 0022 offer different ways to explore the area on foot or by bike.
Granite, Village History and Memorials
A unique granite bell tower stands beside the pond in the village square. The inscription was renewed to mark the centenary of the bell, or the bell tower by the pond. Granite appears in different contexts here: as the material of a distinctive structure, in Žernovka’s origins as a stonemasons’ village, and in the ongoing extraction at some local quarries.
The memorials also highlight different aspects of history. Žernovka has a memorial to Abbot Arnošt Vykoukal and one to those who fell in the First World War. One commemorates a named individual, while the other remembers those who fell in a particular war. Alongside the history of stonemasonry, the village landscape thus reflects personal and wartime connections.
Forest, Boundary Stones and Route Names
Granite boundary stones are still found in the forest towards Doubek. This part of the forest is called “V hranicích” (“At the Boundaries”); the stones once marked the boundaries between estates. The name and former function give the forest a distinct history of boundaries. At the same time, the area is especially popular with mushroom pickers, bringing historical traces together with local recreational use.
The route’s history has its own name, too: the original name of the Kutnohorské trails was “Zelená cesta” (“Green Road”). Another local tradition concerns the checkpoint at Jezírko in Žernovka. Since 1994, firefighters from Mukařov or Žernovka have been responsible for looking after it.
Nature Trail and Cycle Route
The NS Mukařov-Žernovka nature trail is about 1.5 kilometres long and ends at the fire station and children’s playground in Žernovka. Its named endpoint and approximate length provide a clear outline of the route. The entire trail is accessible to pedestrians and pushchairs; cyclists can also use it, provided they take appropriate care in view of traffic.
Cycle route 0022 also passes through Žernovka, where it branches off cycle route 1 between Prague and Brno. The two route descriptions answer different orientation questions: for the nature trail, the focus is on length, endpoint and accessibility; for cycle route 0022, the key points are its passage through the village and its junction with cycle route 1.
There are several ways to approach choosing a stay in Žernovka: granite and village history, memorials and boundary stones, or the different details about the nature trail and cycle route. You can use these to decide whether you are most interested in learning about the village’s history or focusing on its routes.
