Construction of Veltrusy Château began in 1704 as a generously designed Baroque residence. Together with the historic landscape park, the château shapes the cultural and scenic character of the area. This offers several perspectives for planning a trip: architectural history, park paths and protected nature each provide a different focus, which you can prioritise according to your interests.
The Château and Its History
Veltrusy Château was declared a national cultural monument in 2002. Its original design is associated with the architect Giovanni Battista Alliprandi; the original plans have not survived. This places the Baroque design and its later designation as a heritage monument alongside each other as distinct historical reference points. Another cultural and historical landmark in Veltrusy is the Kostel Narození sv. Jana Křtitele church.
The protected religious building has a Gothic presbytery and a surviving fragment of a figurative wall painting from the second half of the 14th century. The timeline therefore stretches from a medieval work of art to the Baroque residence. The château and church offer different perspectives on the area's architectural and artistic history.
Landscape and Nature
Veltrusy Park is one of the five oldest landscape parks in Czechia. It is freely accessible from dawn until dusk; check the current access information before your visit. Fallow deer have been kept in the Veltrusy game reserve since 1802. The Veltrusy Natural Monument protects the hermit beetle (Osmoderma barnabita) and the stag beetle (Lucanus cervus), along with their habitats. The park's history, deer keeping and species conservation each offer their own perspective on the landscape.
Hiking Route, Cycling Tour and Water
The Six Bridges hiking route follows the Mlýnská strouha past bridges and park pavilions. Another way to explore the park is on a guided cycling tour, which takes you to small park pavilions and various bridges over the Mlýnský potok, through floodplain forest, and to views of fields, meadows and an orchard. The hiking route follows the Mlýnská strouha, while the cycling tour also focuses on several other landscape features. Check the current booking requirements before planning the guided tour.
Another feature with a different focus is the artificial Veltrusy slalom channel. It uses 350 metres of a former timber-raft passage at the Miřejovice weir. The stated length refers to the section of the former passage that is in use.
Getting There and Finding Accommodation
Direct bus routes 370 and 372 run via the Veltrusy stop from Prague-Kobylisy to Kralupy nad Vltavou and back. Check the current timetable before travelling so your journey fits your planned visiting times.
If you are looking for accommodation for a stay in Veltrusy, let your main interests guide your plans: the château and church offer a cultural and historical focus, while the hiking route and guided cycling tour provide different ways to explore. This lets you tailor your search for holiday rentals to the experiences you want to have in Veltrusy.
