Dolní Zimoř lies in a narrow valley of the Želízská svodnice. In landscape terms, the municipality belongs to Kokořínsko and the Kokořín and Mšeno landscape area. The scenery there is shaped by gorge-like valleys, sandstone rocks weathered in different ways, wooded slopes and meadows on the valley floors. To understand the location, it is worth considering both scales: the narrow valley itself and the wider landscape with its valleys and rock formations.

Valley, Rocks and Protected Habitats

A rocky section on the northern side of Zimořský důl is protected as the Želízky Natural Monument. The natural monument preserves a heat-favoured habitat along the rock edges, with rare and endangered plant and animal communities. Species found there include the leafless iris (Iris aphylla) and the meadow pasqueflower (Pulsatilla pratensis). The combination of a rocky edge, a heat-favoured habitat and rare species makes Želízky a distinctive nature feature of Dolní Zimoř.

Zimořský důl and the adjoining slopes are also among the particularly valuable areas within the Natura 2000 network and the Kokořínsko biotope. This means the protected rocky section sits alongside the designation of the valley and its adjoining slopes.

On Foot and by Bike

The trail in Zimořský důl is particularly popular for short walks around Dolní Zimoř. A shared hiking and cycling route runs between Želízy and Kokořín. A hiking trail branches off this route to Sitné and Vidim, while a cycling route leads to Vysoká. When choosing a route, you can distinguish between a local trail for short walks and the different destinations served by the hiking and cycling routes.

Vernacular Architecture in the Village

Dolní Zimoř belongs to the Kokořínsko region of vernacular architecture. Some buildings in the village have retained their original, distinctive character, particularly in Horní Zimoř and south of the road to Želízy. This connects the regional designation with specific parts of the village. The buildings add another perspective on Dolní Zimoř to the picture of its landscape and nature. If you would like to explore the village itself as well as its trails and rocky scenery, you can include these areas in your plans.

Routes and Arrival

Dolní Zimoř is away from the main roads; only three third-class roads pass through the municipal area. There are about eight visitor parking spaces in front of the municipal office. Their approximate number and location provide a useful point of reference when arriving in the village.

A footpath runs along the road to Želízy. The route between Dolní Zimoř and Horní Zimoř is considered suitable and largely barrier-free. Access to the Želízky Natural Monument is different: it crosses pathless terrain, and the site is more than 250 metres from the road. If you plan to visit the natural monument, take this terrain condition into account when planning your routes.
