Vidim combines a protected historic townscape with cultural monuments and sandstone paths. The area around Vidim lies within the Kokořínsko–Máchův kraj Protected Landscape Area. You can plan your visit around different interests: explore the historic centre, distinctive buildings and archaeological traces, or focus on the hiking trails and climbing in Vidimský důl. The history of the village and activity in the landscape offer different perspectives on your stay.

Townscape and village heritage zone

Vidim’s historic centre is protected as a village heritage zone. The village also preserves a traditional settlement pattern with characteristic features of linear development. Its character is therefore shaped not only by individual buildings, but also by the historic layout of the village. If you enjoy viewing historic places in context, this combination gives you a thread to follow before taking a closer look at individual buildings. The village heritage zone and linear settlement pattern describe different aspects: the former refers to the protection status of the historic centre, while the latter describes its traditional settlement form.

Château complex and Church of St Martin

The Vidimský zámek complex is protected as an immovable cultural monument. It includes extensive château gardens and a rich sculptural collection. The gardens and sculptures are therefore part of the complex, not merely additions to a single building. Opposite the château complex, in the northern part of Vidim, stands the present-day Neo-Gothic Church of St Martin. It dates from 1878, and its enclosure contains 14 niche chapels forming a Stations of the Cross. Facing one another, the church and château form two distinct features of the townscape. A visit focused on cultural history can take in their architecture, features and spatial relationship together.

Starý zámek: a different historical trace

Starý zámek is also part of Vidim’s historic landscape, but refers to a different site from Vidimský zámek. Starý zámek is a ruin and an archaeologically documented rock castle site dating from the 14th to the 15th century; traces remain in the terrain. The comparison helps distinguish the two names: one refers to a castle site whose traces lie in the landscape, while the other refers to the protected château complex with its garden and sculptural collection. Visitors interested in architectural and settlement history can thus keep different historical layers in view.

Hiking and climbing

The Vidimské lávky offer a walk among sandstone rocks near Vidim. At the edges of the ravines, they lead over steps, cuttings and passages carved into the sandstone, crossing the ravines. The condition of the route is especially important: many of the Vidimské lávky are in poor condition and have missing railings. Check the conditions on site before setting out; sturdy footwear is recommended for the walk.

The Kokořínsko–Máchův kraj Protected Landscape Area has a dense network of marked hiking trails. Some lead through challenging terrain and over rocks that must be negotiated with the aid of chains. Shops selling drinks and snacks are limited in the area; sturdy footwear and plenty of drinking water are recommended. Take these conditions into account when planning a hike. One specific route is trail 3091 Mšeno–Vyhlídky–Horní Vidim, which reaches Horní Vidim at kilometre 18.5.

Climbing in Vidimský důl is also permitted year-round within designated polygons. As protected-area regulations may change, check the current restrictions before your visit. This lets you choose a focus that suits you: local history and monument preservation, a walk among sandstone rocks, or hiking and climbing, each with its own conditions.
