The gorge-like valley and the Pšovka stream define Kokořínský Důl; the nature reserve was established in 1953. For nature lovers and hikers, the landscape is therefore a key starting point when choosing a stay in Kokorinsky Dul. Marked trails provide different ways to explore the Důl, while the sandstone formations and Kokořín Castle add geological and cultural-historical highlights.
Sandstone Formations and Landscape
Among the striking geological formations are the Kokořínské Pokličky: rock towers made of medium- to coarse-grained sandstone from the Jizerské Suite. They are capped by a resistant layer of iron-rich sandstone through to conglomerate; the towers formed through the selective weathering of sandstone. Some of the rock formations reach heights of up to 12 metres. Selective weathering means that rock wears away at different rates; the resistant cap layer is part of the geological explanation for the tower shape. For anyone who wants to take in the landscape as well as follow the trail on a hike, this offers a specific natural feature to look out for.
Marked Trails and Nature Trail
The red-marked Máchova stezka runs through the entire length of Kokořínský Důl. Other marked hiking trails cross it or meet it. This makes a practical difference when choosing a route: the red marking indicates a continuous route along the valley, while the other trails connect to it at meeting points and crossings. This makes it possible to distinguish a route along the entire Důl from a plan that includes additional marked trails.
The Kokořínský důl nature trail is an option measured differently. A visitor guide from 2011, updated in March 2012, gives its length as about 7 km and lists ten stops. While the Máchova stezka is defined by its route through the entire Důl, the nature trail has an approximate length and a specific number of stops. The same guide says most sections are suitable for cyclists. This qualification is important for planning: it does not apply to the entire nature trail. Since route details should be checked locally, confirm the route before setting out on a hike or bike ride.
Kokořín Castle and Local History
Kokořín Castle is located in Kokořínský Důl, in the municipality of Kokořín, in the Central Bohemian Region and the Mělník District. It has been protected as a national cultural monument since 1 January 2002. The footpath from the last car park below the castle to the castle is just under one kilometre long. Factor this distance into your day’s plans; as parking regulations can change, it is advisable to check the current parking situation in advance.
The settlement of Kaninský Důl is also part of the area’s history: it initially belonged to the municipality of Kokořín and ceased to exist on 1 January 1980.
