The village square in Malý Újezd brings together two buildings from different periods: the granary dating from 1840, which the municipality calls a local landmark, and the Neo-Gothic Chapel of the Most Sacred Heart from the early 19th century. The first documented mention of the village dates from 1517. This date is much earlier than the construction dates and adds an older written record to the story of the village square.

Local History at the Village Square

A memorial to the victims of war stands in front of the chapel. The chapel was renovated in 2016 and subsequently reconsecrated. The village square thus brings together architectural history, religious history and public remembrance. Anyone interested in local history will find several specific points of interest here: the early documented mention, the granary and the chapel with its more recent renovation history.

River, Wetlands and Protected Areas

The Pšovka flows through Malý Újezd. The protected Dolní Pšovka Natural Monument also includes the village’s cadastral area and protects small watercourses, bodies of water and associated wetlands. The local landscape can therefore also be explored through its waterways and wetland habitats.

Another natural area is the important Polabská černava National Nature Reserve, near the Pšovka. It was designated in 1946. Part of it lies within the cadastral area of Jelenice, but most of it is in that of Mělnická Vrutice. In the nearby area of Jelenice u Mělníka, the reserve protects calcareous marshes and seasonally wet meadows. The nearby Kokořínsko Protected Landscape Area is also very easy for visitors to reach and offers numerous opportunities for recreation and sports.

Squares, Paths and Activities

Jelenický plácek has a children’s playground, an outdoor fitness area and a recreation area. This gives the square a different focus from the village square: here, exercise and relaxation take centre stage. Residents use the path to Vavřineč, lined with a poplar avenue, for walks.

Rest areas have been set up along the path from Jelenice to Vavřineč and in Vavřineč, on the path towards the forest. They provide facilities for cyclists, mothers with children and older people out for a walk. As facilities may change, it is advisable to check what is available on site before your visit. The Vavřineč multi-purpose sports court can be reserved; check the latest reservation details for this as well.

Cycle Route 8171 runs from Mělník via Malý Újezd to Jelenice. If you are planning a trip along the route, check its current course, as route details may change. The sequence of places offers a different way to find your bearings than the walking path to Vavřineč: the cycle route connects Mělník, Malý Újezd and Jelenice, while the walking path described leads to Vavřineč.

Plan Your Journey

The Lysá nad Labem–Ústí nad Labem railway line passes through Malý Újezd. A bus service connects the village with Mladá Boleslav, and Malý Újezd is also on road I/16 between Mělník and Mladá Boleslav. For train and bus travel, it is worth checking the timetables for your specific travel date. This will help you plan your journey using the available services and decide whether the village square, the countryside or one of the named routes should be the focus of your stay.
