Horní Počaply lies on the left bank of the lower Elbe, on the border between the Central Bohemian Region and the Ústí nad Labem Region. Three specific features shape the choice of a destination here: the church on a hill above the village, the sports complex with its wide range of facilities, and the cycling route along the Elbe. The location details answer two different questions: the left bank places the village on the Elbe, while the border indicates its regional position. Architecture, cycling and various sports offer different ways to spend your stay.
Church on the hill: architecture and history
The Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary (“Kostel Nanebevzetí Panny Marie”) stands prominently on a hill above Horní Počaply and is surrounded by a cemetery. It dates back to a Gothic church from the 14th century and was restored in 1869–1871. The building is single-naved, with a prismatic tower and a rectangular chancel. The dates therefore distinguish its 14th-century origins from its later restoration in the 19th century. The term “single-naved” describes a church interior with one main nave; the chancel and tower are other prominent architectural features.
The protected ensemble includes more than just the church building: it also comprises a mortuary, the perimeter wall with gates, the gravestones of J. Macháček and A. Březina, and a statue of Saint John of Nepomuk. The municipality also describes the church as a reminder of the time of the Carthusian monastery Zahrada Panny Marie at Prague’s Újezd in the history of Počaply. This reference to the monastery adds another historical connection to the village’s architectural history.
Sports in Horní Počaply
The “Sportovní areál Horní Počaply” sports complex is open to the general public, regardless of age or athletic ability. Its facilities include a football pitch, a multi-purpose court and a hockeyball court. There are also facilities for volleyball, badminton, speed badminton and Ogo, as well as two tennis courts. For indoor sports, there is a table tennis hall and a gymnasium; the complex also has a skatepark and children’s playgrounds. The facilities combine pitches and multi-purpose courts with racket sports and indoor sports; the skatepark and playgrounds extend the range of options. Horní Počaply railway station is about 300 metres from the sports complex.
Cycling and fishing along the Elbe
The cycling route along the Elbe has no hills and is also suitable for beginner cyclists riding with their parents. Fishing is permitted from watercraft in the Labe 13 fishing district; a local or an association fishing permit is required. The route and the fishing offer different experiences: one features a flat ride, while the other involves fishing from a watercraft and having the necessary permit. Before fishing, check which permit applies to your visit.
