Pears for cider lead to an unusual discovery: MOSTELLO is a pear dessert wine blend made from old, rare cider pear varieties from the surrounding area. At Mostelleria, an interactive exhibition shows how MOSTELLO is made; in the maturation cellar, you can enjoy barrel tastings. The product, ingredients and tasting offer a tangible introduction to a regional specialty.

Between an adventure trail and a cycling route

The “On the trail of the Forstheide” adventure trail is 2.1 kilometres long and features 14 interactive stations. The Ybbstal Cycle Path, by contrast, focuses on a much longer route: its 55-kilometre central section runs between Waidhofen an der Ybbs and Lunz am See along the railway line of the former Ybbstalbahn. It is flat and close to the river. The length, route and stations offer different points of reference for comparing the two paths.

Rail connections are also useful for getting around. A regional train runs hourly from Amstetten to Waidhofen an der Ybbs, stopping at several stations along the Ybbstal Cycle Path. Separate timetables apply on weekdays, Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays, so check the connection for your travel date. Ă–BB Railjet and Westbahn trains also stop in Amstetten; bicycles can be taken on board.

Museums offering different perspectives

The Ostarrichi Museum in Neuhofen an der Ybbs is devoted to the history of Austria’s origins. In seven stages, the story spans from the well-known “Ostarrichi charter” to the signing of the treaty on the European Union. The Mostviertler Farmers’ Museum has a different focus: it presents the working and living world of Mostviertel’s farmers, as well as rural workshop displays representing 20 different trades. Its collection includes around 22,000 objects from the lives of Mostviertel’s farmers and craftspeople. In this way, accounts of Austria’s history and insights into rural life and work offer contrasting perspectives.

Several interests also come together at Sonntagberg. The minor basilica is considered one of Europe’s most important pilgrimage sites. Its present appearance, with its distinctive twin towers, is the work of Baroque master builders Jakob Prandtauer and Josef Mungenast. The panoramic high-altitude trail at Sonntagberg invites you to enjoy a walk with views. Another connection to cider pears can be found on the new pear trail in Öhling: it follows in the footsteps of Johann Kirchweger, a supporter of the Mauer Regional Hospital and a pioneer of cider pear cultivation. Check the trail’s current condition before visiting.
