The Ostarrichi Museum tells the story of Austrian history in seven steps: from the Ostarrichi document to the signing of the Treaty on European Union. Neuhofen an der Ybbs combines this historical perspective with Late Gothic church architecture, milling traditions and destinations focused on gardens and landscapes. This makes it easy to shape your stay around culture while also adding walks or a seasonal swimming option.

History and Architecture

The parish church of the Assumption of Mary is a Late Gothic hall church. Its net rib vault dates from around 1466. Those interested in church architecture can consider two distinct points of reference here: the church’s classification as a hall church and the dated vault as a specific architectural feature. The Ostarrichi Museum takes a different approach, telling the story of Austria in seven steps. The span from the Ostarrichi document to the signing of the Treaty on European Union connects early history with a more recent European milestone.

The name and the date are two separate points of reference for the town’s history: the settlement of “Niuvanhova” is first mentioned in connection with the name “Ostarrichi.” The donation of the land around Neuhofen to the Diocese of Freising is dated November 1, 996; Emperor Otto III made the donation on that day. The early form of the name and the donation of the land to the Diocese of Freising mark distinct points of reference in the town’s history.

The Harreither Staudenmühle offers another way to explore regional history. The mill, which originally dates back to 1435, is bringing the milling trade back to life and processes high-quality, natural and organic grain from the region. Visitors are welcome. Alongside the building’s history, the focus here is on craftsmanship and the processing of regional products—a different emphasis from the museum or the church.

Gardens and Routes

At the Erde-Feuer-Garten, a sensory trail passes a fragrant hedge and a herb spiral on its way to a pergola. The garden can be reached by car, bicycle and on foot. As a route idea, the Königshufenweg connects the Ostarrichi Kulturhof with the garden, passes through St. Veit and returns to the Ostarrichi Kulturhof. The route therefore has a clearly named starting and return point, as well as a sequence that links the garden with the cultural centre.

The Neuhofen Panorama Loop leads to Pöttenberg and offers views across the Mostviertel landscape. The Mostbaron Cycling Route offers a different route connection: its southern section runs between Euratsfeld and Neuhofen. These provide different points of reference when choosing a route: the Panorama Loop focuses on Pöttenberg and its landscape views, while the cycling route follows the stretch between the two named towns.

The Outdoor Pool as a Seasonal Option

The Neuhofen outdoor pool’s swimming season runs from June to early September. Facilities include a 42-metre-long water slide, a children’s pool, a large sunbathing lawn, an expansive green area for ball games, a children’s playground and a buffet. The outdoor pool opened in June 1975 and was ceremonially reopened 50 years later following renovations. If you plan to include the pool in your itinerary, take the swimming season into account; the museum, church architecture, mill and routes offer different thematic highlights.
