The Way of St. James through the Mostviertel runs directly through Zeillern; the Sonntagberg Way also branches off here to the south. Alongside these pilgrimage routes, the town is shaped by the history of its castle and church. For walks and bike rides, there are several different points of reference: a named starting point, a hiking route with an approximate walking time and a cycling route with a specified direction. In spring, the fruit blossom adds a seasonal feature to the landscape.
Castle History, Church and Music
The history of Schloss Hotel Zeillern dates back to 863, when King Louis the German gave the estate to Niederaltaich Abbey. Schloss Zeillern has established itself as an important cultural and musical meeting place. The use of its outdoor areas is also described: the courtyard, castle lawn and Castle Island of Schloss Hotel Zeillern offer space for summer festivals, concerts and outdoor seminars.
Another point of interest for culture lovers is the parish church of St. James, with its beautifully carved altar. Under the Seiseneggers, the church was converted into a Late Gothic hall church. Since 1988, Zeillern has been home to the Lower Austrian Brass Band Association, which mainly uses the town for further training. Architectural history, church art and musical culture thus sit side by side in Zeillern, without being limited to a single attraction.
Hiking Trails and Pilgrimage Routes
The Way of St. James through the Mostviertel passes through Zeillern. The Sonntagberg Way branches off here to the south and leads via Aschbach to Seitenstetten Abbey; from there, it continues towards Sonntagberg. Including these routes in your plans lets you distinguish the Way of St. James that passes through Zeillern from the southern turnoff.
The Most Orchard Hiking Trail starts at the information board on Castle Island, opposite Schloss Zeillern. Its starting point is therefore clearly identified. The Inspiration Trail offers a different reference for planning your time: it has six stations covering different topics and takes about 1.5 to 2 hours to walk. The number of stations and approximate duration give this trail its own place in the day’s plans.
The Hubertus Chapel can also be included as a destination for a walk: marked trails maintained by the Zeillern Tourism Association lead to it at the edge of the forest. The chapel was built in 1974. If you are interested in trails with a named destination, you can consider it alongside the pilgrimage routes and the themed stations of the Inspiration Trail.
Cycling, Seasons and Breaks
The Mostbaron cycling route passes Schloss Zeillern and then continues a short distance north towards Stephanshart. Its direction sets it apart from the hiking and pilgrimage routes in the town. In spring, flowering fruit trees shape Zeillern’s cultural landscape; it is especially inviting for hiking and cycling at this time of year. The season thus adds its own aspect of the landscape to your choice of activities.
For a break, the public Zeillern market square, also known as the “Red Square,” has seating. The drinking fountain can be used during frost-free periods. On Castle Island, beautifully landscaped jetties beside the water invite you to linger and relax. The town also combines a clearly identified starting point for the Most Orchard Hiking Trail with a place where you can plan a break.
Planning Your Stay in Zeillern
First, consider whether you are more interested in church and castle history, a pilgrimage route, a hike with a stated walking time or a cycling route. If you would like to combine your visit with a summer festival, concert or outdoor seminar, check the specific event dates and accommodation availability for your travel dates.
