Amstetten offers several distinct themes for a stay: getting active along the Ybbs, learning about nature along the Forstheide, and exploring the cultural history of Ulmerfeld Castle. The Ybbs riverside trail invites you to walk, run and cycle all year round; the Forstheide adventure trail adds a themed route with interactive information stations. At the castle, the focus is on its historic construction phases and events in the arcaded courtyard.

Trails along the Ybbs and through the Forstheide

The Ybbs riverside trail is a green promenade right beside the Ybbs. It is suitable for walking, running and cycling at any time of year. In summer, small gravel beaches and shady spots to cool off provide places to pause by the water.

The Forstheide adventure trail offers a different focus: across 14 interactive stations, it presents facts about the Forstheide along a 2.1-kilometre route. The Ybbs and the GroĂźe Meerwiese lie along the trail. There are hardly any inclines, making the route suitable for strollers, tricycles and balance bikes. This information can help you choose if you are looking for a themed route and are travelling with one of the listed types of equipment. The difference from the Ybbs riverside trail lies in the focus: walking, running and cycling are all possible there, while the information stations and landscape features define the route through the Forstheide.

Ulmerfeld Castle: History of the building and events

Ulmerfeld Castle adds a cultural and historical perspective to your travel plans. Construction of the castle tower began at the end of the 12th century. The Gothic castle chapel, with its wall paintings, dates from the 14th century. At the same castle, you can therefore encounter architectural elements from different centuries. Theatre performances and concerts take place in the arcaded courtyard. If you are planning to attend a performance, check the current dates in advance, as the programme may change.

Planet Trail and Riverside Park

The Planet Trail offers a clearly defined route: it leads from the grammar school along the MĂĽhlbach to the Jahnturnhalle, then continues via Schwarzen Weg and YbbsstraĂźe to the final station. The information boards cover the Sun, the eight planets, the dwarf planet Pluto and Earth's moon. Check for current notices on site during your visit, as route details and information on the boards may be updated.

Riverside Park has a freely accessible play, sports and action area. Its Action Trail is a fitness playground based on urban sports such as parkour and freerunning. This makes its focus different from that of the Planet Trail: here, the emphasis is on physical activity, while the Planet Trail features information boards on astronomical topics. As access and facilities may change, check the latest notices before your visit.

Plan your cycling trip and overnight stay

Amstetten also offers a convenient rail connection for cyclists: the Ybbstal Cycle Path is connected to the Western Railway line in Amstetten. Check current train connections before your trip if you plan to use this link.
