The 33-hectare Haag Wildlife Park is located in the grounds of Salaberg Castle and brings together two distinctive themes of the town: wildlife and cultural heritage. Other attractions include an open-air museum with historic farmhouses, a late Gothic fortified church, and routes for cycling and hiking. Haag can therefore be explored according to a range of interests when planning your trip—from architecture and history to outdoor activities.

Wildlife Park and Mostviertel Building Culture

The wildlife park is home to more than 70 native and exotic animal species, with around 700 animals. The enclosures are spacious and largely designed to resemble natural habitats. The park also has an adventure playground with numerous play and skill stations. If these stations are important to your visit, check their current condition, as individual facilities may change.

The Lower Austrian Open-Air Museum offers a different perspective on the region. It comprises 20 historic rural buildings and objects, mostly from the Mostviertel region, reconstructed true to the originals. The collection focuses on rural architectural styles and the origins of the buildings and objects on display. At Salaberg Castle, the Venetian ballroom makes a distinctive impression: richly sculpted stucco, abundant painted decoration and magnificent marblework define the room.

Church, Collections and Theatre

The late Gothic fortified Church of St. Michael combines architectural history with a distinctive vault structure. Its construction began in 1433/1435, initially with the tower and choir. All three naves feature an elaborate net-rib vault supported by octagonal pillars. Exploring Haag’s history, visitors can consider both the period in which the building was constructed and the layout of its interior.

The Iron Museum houses an unusual collection of around 200 irons, including examples from practically every corner of the world. Among its special objects are ironing pans dating from the 17th century. The museum also has an iron stove from the 17th or 18th century, used to heat solid iron irons. These pieces show the variety of forms and historical uses found in a single collection.

Theatre is also part of Haag’s cultural programme. The Haag Theatre Summer takes place annually during the summer months; productions and dates vary. The Haag Theatre Cellar offers an events programme and its own production. Guided town tours pass through historic squares and buildings, sharing stories and background from times gone by; individual dates may vary. For a specific trip, it is worth checking the relevant event dates in advance.

Cycling and Hiking Routes, Seasonal Swimming

A signposted cycling route runs around the town of Haag. The town is also a starting point for the Most Cycle Route and is connected to the Danube Cycle Path. In addition to the local route, two named cycling routes can therefore help you plan your tour. Haag’s hiking trails are signposted circular routes that start at the Lower Austrian Open-Air Museum. The NORD hiking trail (490) is 18 km long. Check current trail conditions before setting out.

The Haag Adventure Pool offers more opportunities for activity and relaxation, with two water slides and a children’s adventure pool. It operates seasonally, so check in advance whether a visit is possible during your travel dates. Two recurring events offer different highlights throughout the year: Most & Music focuses on local cider and traditional music, while the Haag Theatre Summer features theatrical productions during the summer months. Dates vary—a look at the specific event dates will help you include these activities in your travel plans.
