Several pilgrim routes pass through Pfaffenberg. Both the Sonntagberg Route and the Mostviertel Way of St James list the village on their second stage towards Zeillern. The stage details therefore offer a concrete starting point for planning: you can distinguish the routes by their names and the direction described, rather than identifying them solely by their shared place name.
Hiking and Pilgrimage through Pfaffenberg
The second stage of the Sonntagberg Route passes through Pfaffenberg on its way to Zeillern. The second stage of the Mostviertel Way of St James also runs through Pfaffenberg towards Zeillern. If you include either of these routes in your stay, be sure to note the full route name. Having the same stage number, village and direction does not make the two routes one and the same.
A route description for the Austrian Way of St James adds a specific section to this overview: near Pfaffenberg, a turn-off leads along a small road past a wayside shrine and downhill to the Denkenbachl stream. This makes it possible to follow the route described via clearly identified landmarks—from the turn-off, past the shrine and down to the stream. For your own planning, this is a different kind of information from the stage details for the Sonntagberg Route and the Mostviertel Way of St James.
The signposted 10,000 Steps Trail also passes named destinations: Jägerkreuz, Steinerne Stube and Panoramastein are among the sights along the route. Panoramastein is also a viewpoint. On clear days, the view stretches across the Northern Limestone Alps and the foothills of the Alps, from Schneeberg to Traunstein. The weather note is important for the view: the long-distance panorama described is visible on clear days.
The Matrassteig offers another specific hiking route: it leads from the Grein Danube Bridge up to Brandstetterkogel, gaining just under 300 metres in elevation. The elevation information helps distinguish this route in your tour planning from the stages through Pfaffenberg and the signposted 10,000 Steps Trail. There is also a named connection to cycling in the municipality: around 15 kilometres of the Passau–Vienna Danube Cycle Path lie within the municipality of Neustadtl an der Donau.
Culture, Scenery and Views
Cultural highlights include the Georgssäule, a nine-metre-high early Baroque work of art. It was erected between 1650 and 1664. The pillory is a reminder of the old market court and now forms the column of a wayside cross in the market square. The two structures offer different historical perspectives: the Georgssäule is characterised by its artistic form and period of creation, while the pillory is defined by its former function and its present use as part of a wayside cross.
The Nadlingerhof is home to a living museum in a very old farmhouse. Visitors can experience rural traditions and culture there, and the visitor offering also includes a Mostjause, a snack featuring cider. The museum visit thus combines an insight into rural culture with a specifically named culinary offering. The Mostjause is part of what the Nadlingerhof offers, not a general statement about dining in Pfaffenberg.
Wörth Island has been a nature reserve since 1970. It covers 13.5 hectares; three ponds on the island have a combined area of 1.81 hectares. These figures describe both the size of the protected area and the area covered by the ponds. Another viewpoint is Reiterkogel: at 520 metres above sea level, it is described as both a viewpoint and a local recreation area.
The MoststraĂźe has also passed through the municipality of Neustadtl an der Donau since 2005. This adds another named route to the hiking and cycling trails. There is an important current restriction to bear in mind if visiting Freyenstein Castle Ruins: the path to the ruins and the area around them are currently closed for safety reasons. Check the latest status before planning a visit. Freyenstein is first mentioned in detail in the early Babenberg period; this historical context does not change the current closure.
