A castle hill with a late-medieval church defines the townscape of Raron. It is also the final resting place of the poet Rainer Maria Rilke. The buildings, the stories associated with the village and the paths through the landscape give Raron its distinctive cultural character.

Castle Rock, Churches and Places of Remembrance

The medieval castle complex stands on a rugged rocky outcrop. Archaeological investigations carried out from 1970 to 1972 helped reconstruct its construction history in broad outline. The Church of St. Romanus was built around the old palas by master builder Ulrich Ruffiner between 1512 and 1518. The Viztum Castle is also one of Raron’s historic buildings: it dates from the 12th century, is first mentioned in 1268, and is considered the best-preserved and probably most beautiful example of Romanesque secular architecture in Valais.

The castle museum is housed in the Old Rectory next to the castle church. Its three floors feature exhibitions about Ulrich Ruffiner, notable figures in Valais history and Rainer Maria Rilke. From the castle hill, the view stretches across the Rhone Valley. The Church of St. Michael offers a different kind of architecture: built into the rock in 1974, the rock church has 500 seats and is considered the largest rock church in Europe.

The Maxenhaus also tells the story of Raron’s past. Before 1813, when Valais still belonged to France, it also served as a post office. This is recalled by the so-called “oldest letterbox in Switzerland”—a small, tangible link to the building’s former function.

Trails between Culture and Landscape

The Ausserberg–Raron Cultural Trail is an easy hike, especially suited to nature lovers and families. Historic irrigation channels are among its features; those who opt for the optional detour pass Heidnischbiel, a pre-Christian settlement site. The route brings together the landscape and a glimpse of settlement history.

If you’d rather explore this route by solving puzzles, the Finding-Daniel experience offers a scavenger hunt along the old cultural trail from Ausserberg to Raron. Creative challenges explore history, geology, flora and fauna. The route is about 4.5 kilometres long, ends in Raron and offers good public transport connections from there to the transport hub of Visp. Check in advance whether the scavenger hunt is currently available.

In the Bietschtal valley, a different course takes you into a much more challenging adventure: its features include a large cave, a 25-metre-high abseil point and several zip lines, the last of which is 72 metres long. The course starts in Raron or Sankt German at an old bridge above the railway viaduct and ends at Ausserberg station. It may only be traversed with a mountain guide; check current safety conditions before visiting, too. The Bietschhorn and Bietschtal valley are integral parts of the Swiss Alps Jungfrau-Aletsch UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Another striking contrast in the landscape can be found along the Niwärch irrigation channel near Ausserberg. First mentioned in a document in 1388, it still supplies Ausserberg’s irrigation system today. The route follows highly exposed, steep mountain slopes into the UNESCO-protected area of the Baltschiedertal valley. Take the challenging trail conditions into account when planning your hike.

The trails in Eischoll and Unterbäch also differ in duration and season. The easy Meisenweg trail in Eischoll takes 70 minutes of walking time, is recommended for children aged five and up, and passes through the nature and animals as well as water activity areas. The groomed Unterbäch–Eischoll Panorama Trail is an easy winter hike of about 6.43 kilometres and takes approximately one hour and 50 minutes. It runs from Brandalp to Strygge; grooming and conditions may vary. After your hike, you can return to Raron from Eischoll by cable car; check the timetable.

Concerts and Pilgrim Trail

The cultural calendar includes recurring concert events: Raron hosts an Epiphany concert and three Rencontres-Musiques concerts every year. The Rencontres-Musiques concert series in the castle church promotes exchange between musicians from different cultures and language communities. If you’d like to attend a concert, check the current programme dates in advance.

Raron is also a stop on the Rhine–Reuss–Rhone Pilgrim Trail, which connects eastern Valais with the Way of St. James (Via Jacobi) and western Valais with the Way of St. Francis (Via Francigena). Pilgrims can collect the trail stamp at the baptismal font in the castle church. Check the arrangements locally if you’re planning specifically to collect the stamp.
