Bürchen lies at an altitude of 1,360 metres above sea level and is part of the Moosalp region. The sunny plateau offers panoramic views of the Bietschhorn. Old barns, churches and historic buildings shape the village; the historically preserved village centre has retained its original character. Visitors planning a stay here will find a range of options: trails with themed stations, winter routes, regional offerings and a village setting that can also be explored away from the hiking trails.

Village Trails with Distinct Themes

The Squirrel Trail starts at the InfoCenter in Bürchen and runs for around 500 metres through a section of forest. More than 20 information boards and interactive stations are devoted to the European red squirrel. This short distance refers to the forest section, not the entire loop: including the access path and return route, the complete loop is 7.5 kilometres long and takes about two hours. Since route measurements may change if the access section is adjusted, and trail conditions should be checked, it is worth checking the current route before setting out.

Another themed loop is the Birch Educational Trail. It passes through several hamlets in Bürchen and shares interesting facts about the birch on ten information boards. The circular hike takes about two hours. This makes its duration comparable to that of the complete Squirrel Trail, although the content and route are different. The Squirrel Trail focuses on a forest section and interactive stations, while the Birch Educational Trail focuses on the birch and the hamlets. The walking time for this loop is also approximate.

If you are looking for a culinary hike, you can consider the Magic Moos Tour. It combines stops at three restaurants of your choice with a three-course Moos menu made from regional produce. The offer is seasonal and can be booked; check availability and which restaurants are participating before making plans.

Excursions and Trails Throughout the Year

In the hamlet of Bodmen, the Alpine mini golf course has 18 holes; its season may vary. A ball run is located at Ronalpstrasse 38, next to the mini golf course. Check the details of the visitor offering before travelling. This lets you include both activities in your day’s plans without treating them as equivalent to the longer hikes.

There are different types of routes in winter. The Zenhäusern Sport Trail is a snowshoeing loop through the forests of Bürchen towards Hellela in Zeneggen; markings and conditions depend on the season. A winter walk leads directly from Bürchen to the terraced clearing of Hellela and through Eggwald forest. It is therefore a separate option from the snowshoeing loop. Winter conditions and work in the forest can affect conditions on the winter walk.

The Moosalp region ski area is another distinct option, with nine lifts and 25 kilometres of pistes. The history of Moosalp Bergbahnen began in Bürchen in 1961; this historical fact does not indicate the current operating status. The number of lifts and piste kilometres may change, so it is advisable to check the latest information before making plans. Cross-country skiing access points are located on the Squirrel Trail and in Blatt in Bürchen, as well as in Rohr in Zeneggen. Trails and access points are seasonal.

For a hike with a different starting point, the route from Brandalp in Unterbäch descends towards Bürchen along a wide forest road and is part of MoosAlbis Welt. The route described is considered suitable for families with pushchairs; maintenance and weather can affect accessibility. Another path begins at the large church in Bürchen-Hasel and descends to the Wandfluh Chapel near Raron. Check access and trail conditions locally. The Maria-Hilf Chapel is accessible to pilgrims and hikers. If you are planning to visit the interior, confirm access locally beforehand.

Getting There and Planning Your Stay

The drive between Bürchen and Visp is listed as 11 kilometres and takes 17 minutes. These are planning estimates, not a guaranteed travel time. Direct PostBus services run to Bürchen; check the current timetable for your journey. The offerings mentioned vary by season and activity. For your day’s plans, it is therefore helpful to first choose between themed trails, a culinary hike and winter activities, then check any relevant conditions or availability in advance.
