Raron brings together Rainer Maria Rilke’s grave, medieval architectural history and a church built entirely inside the rock. At the same time, trails lead into the Jolischlucht gorge, and the Rilke circular trail connects the Rock Church with Rilke’s grave. This makes it easy to plan a visit around cultural sites, a hike, guided experiences and a wine tasting.
Castle, Churches and Rilke’s Connection
The Castle Church of St. Romanus stands at the beginning of a rocky outcrop that extends far into the valley. The Viztum Castle dates from the 12th century and was first mentioned in 1268. From the 12th century onward, the castle served as the seat of episcopal administrators. In Valais, the Viztum Castle is considered the best-preserved and probably most beautiful example of Romanesque secular architecture.
The grave of the poet Rainer Maria Rilke is located on the south side of the Castle Church and is visited every year by numerous admirers. Another distinctive feature of the local churches is the Rock Church of St. Michael: its interior was carved artificially out of the castle hill. After three years of construction, the church was completed in 1974; it lies entirely within the rock and has 500 seats.
The museum in the castle features an exhibition about church builder Ulrich Ruffiner and parish life in the mid-19th century. It also includes a gallery with changing exhibitions of contemporary artists’ work. In the Carillon Experience Room, visitors can try their hand at playing the bells. Architecture, history, art and a hands-on musical activity thus offer different ways to experience the site.
The Rilke Circular Trail and Its Sections
The Rilke circular trail combines photographs with words by Rainer Maria Rilke. Seventeen display panels featuring excerpts from his poems guide visitors from the Rock Church along a paved road to the grave on the south side of the Castle Church. The return route leads from the eastern cemetery exit along a natural trail back to the Rock Church. Those who want to take different trail surfaces into account will find a clearly described change here: a paved road on the way to the grave, and a natural trail on the return.
Jolischlucht and Bietschtal: Different Tours
The hiking route through the Jolischlucht begins in Raron and ends in Niedergesteln. It crosses pastures and follows the southern ramp of the Lötschberg Trail toward the Bietschbach stream before reaching the gorge. The Jolischlucht is visible from the Rhône Valley. The hiking route includes a 20-metre-high suspension bridge with views into the gorge, a specific landmark for anyone interested in this tour.
The Bietschtal Bridge adventure course is a separate experience. It starts in Raron or Sankt German at an altitude of 636 metres and is accessible only with a guide. Route conditions and guided arrangements may change, so check the current arrangements before planning your visit. Another regional activity is the Augstbord Enduro Route: it passes through Eischoll and along the Lunggi Trail before returning to Raron.
Wine Experience and Getting There
The wine experience near Raron includes a wine tasting. Local grape varieties are sampled alongside a Valais platter. There is also a guided, more challenging vineyard hike that starts in Raron and passes through the vineyards. This gives you a choice between a tasting with food and a guided hike as different ways to enjoy the area’s wine.
Regional trains run from Sierre or Brig/Visp to Raron station. From there, a paved path leads to the Castle Church. If you are travelling by train, check the current timetable before departure.
