In the second half of May, you can admire the Grängjer tulips at Chalberweid. The Grängjer tulip (Tulipa grengiolensis) is found only in the village of Grengiols and its surrounding area. The village also features a historic centre, a striking church and trails with specific distances and walking times. When planning your trip, first consider whether you want to experience Grengiols mainly during the flowering season, focus on village culture, or explore its walking and hiking routes. Check local conditions for the tulip bloom before travelling.

Getting there and village history

If travelling by train, change to the Matterhorn Gotthard Railway in Brig. Grengiols station is a ten-minute walk from the village centre. Check connections and timetables before your trip so you can plan your arrival and the walk into the centre.

The village centre was systematically rebuilt after the 1799 fire. Grengiols is listed in the Federal Inventory of Swiss Heritage Sites of National Importance and has a distinctive townscape. The parish church is an imposing basilica, built between 1913 and 1915 in a historicist style. It is accompanied by an elegant medieval tower and a walled cemetery. The construction period and tower represent different eras in the village’s history.

The tradition of bell ringing also defines the village, with five church bells. The largest, the Christ the King bell, weighs 2,062 kilograms. Grengiols is also home to one of Switzerland’s last carillonneurs.

Events and customs

Throughout the year, the cultural commission regularly organises cultural events in the village centre; the programme may change. The “Culture in the Open Air” series takes place on the terrace by the village square. In bad weather, events are moved to the renovated Old Gym; the venue may vary for some programmes. If you are planning to attend a particular event, check its date and venue.

An annual custom is “Santigläis Trichjie”: from 8 pm on the evening of 6 December, around 40 men parade through the entire village with large cowbells. Another ritual has taken place every three years since 1999. During it, the sun, represented by a large wheel, is rolled down the steep village lane.

Tulip trails and village walks

The signposted, free “Tulpenring” circular trail starts and ends in Grengiols. It is 2.20 kilometres long, with an elevation difference of 120 metres. Part of it follows the old “Afteri” water channel; the route also includes a biotope near the Milibach. Check seasonal trail conditions before visiting the Tulpenring.

The cultural trail in and around Grengiols is also 2.20 kilometres long and takes about 45 minutes. It starts at the village square and leads along the steep village road and through Toteblatta to TulpenhĂĽgel. When choosing a route, you can therefore distinguish between the Tulpenring, with its water channel and biotope, and the cultural trail, which winds through the lanes and leads to TulpenhĂĽgel.

For a longer walk, the Grengiols–Bister cultural trail leads from Grengiols to Bister and back. It is 6.20 kilometres long and takes about two hours. Another described route runs from Grengiols via Zenhäusern and Bister and back; it follows the old “Milleri” irrigation channel and returns via the historic Roman road, also known as Heerstrasse.

The Grengiols–Bister tree walk passes through a birch avenue and shares information about the trees along the way. It starts in the historic village centre, goes via Bister and returns to Grengiols. The walk is intended for March to November. The route through the Twingi Gorge is classified as easy, is 12.97 kilometres long and takes about 3 hours and 45 minutes. Check trail conditions and seasonal access before travelling. For planning your time, allow about two hours for the Grengiols–Bister cultural trail, compared with around 3 hours and 45 minutes for the longer route through the Twingi Gorge.
