From the Bettmerhorn viewpoint, you can see the Great Aletsch Glacier, with its straight section and large bend. The accessible viewpoint is at an altitude of 2,647 metres and 200 metres from the Bettmerhorn mountain station. Bettmeralp is also a car-free holiday resort, so getting there by train and finding your way to individual destinations are also factors to consider when planning your trip.

Getting There and Finding Your Way

You can reach Bettmeralp by large-cabin cable car from the valley station or by shuttle cable car from the valley station via Betten Dorf. Check the timetable before travelling. Two different reference points help you find your way around once you arrive: Bettmersee is about a ten-minute walk from the village centre; walking time may vary depending on trail conditions. The Bettmerhorn viewpoint, by contrast, is 200 metres from the Bettmerhorn mountain station. Both locations are accessible. These distances therefore refer to different starting points and do not describe the same route.

Bettmerhorn and Bettmersee

At Bettmerhorn, the view is of the glacier and its distinctive shapes: the straight section and the large bend. At Bettmersee, the focus is on a different experience: visitors can ride pedal boats there. The viewpoint and the lake offer different things, depending on your interests: views of the Great Aletsch Glacier on one hand, and time out on the water on the other. The distances given for each are useful for planning, without implying a shared starting point.

Winter Hiking and Outdoor Activities

The Waldpromenade is an easy winter hike on a circular route. It is 5.24 kilometres long and starts at the Bettmeralp aerial cableway mountain station. As conditions depend on the weather, it is worth checking current trail conditions before setting off. The stated length, circular route and easy rating offer three separate points of reference for planning the hike: distance, route and difficulty.

The pump track offers another way to get active outdoors. It is free to use and part of the Raiffeisen Bike Park Aletsch. Check seasonal operating conditions before your visit; the park configuration may also change. At Baschweri, six courses are spread across four difficulty levels. There is also a children’s course for visitors aged four and up, with rope bridges and tyroliennes between the trees. The age requirement and range of difficulty levels help distinguish these activities from one another.

More Destinations and Seasonal Activities

Gletschiland, an indoor playground, is located in the Bachtla sports centre. The Bachtla natural ice rink is nearby, where you can go ice skating. This puts an indoor attraction and an activity on the ice side by side, without suggesting that they are in the same place or offer the same kind of experience.

From June to September, guided goat trekking takes place in the hiking area around Bettmeralp. At a leisurely pace, it lasts about three to four hours; confirm the dates in advance. The village’s cultural side is showcased by the Kulturlernpfad: on nine information panels, Aletscha and Aletschander, two Valais children, tell stories about village life in the past. Maria zum Schnee Chapel is part of the Grand Tour of Switzerland. The activities described therefore range from a guided tour and a winter hike to insights into local history.
