Lake Origlio fills a moraine hollow that gradually filled with water after the retreat of the Adda Glacier about 13,000 years ago. At its northern end is a reed bed that provides a habitat for insects, animals and especially birds—including species that could not live elsewhere. The lake and reeds make nature and landscape history a defining part of Origlio.

The Lake and Trails around Origlio

Lake Origlio has a circumference of 1.2 kilometres. Swimming is not allowed in the lake. For a run, the San Clemente running route is an option: it leads to Origlio, where runners can circle the small lake and pass through the town centre.

The Sentiero Lago di Origlio is described as an easy-to-walk trail. It runs mostly through the forests of Capriasca and leads to the lake. The medieval Torre di Redde and the adjacent Oratorio di San Clemente are also part of the route. Near the tower, parts of the ruins of the village of the same name, preserved underground, can be seen. This trail thus combines nature with a specific historic destination.

The elevation gain for the Sentiero Lago di Origlio–Tesserete is listed differently in each direction: from Tesserete to Origlio it is 200 metres, and from Origlio to Tesserete it is 300 metres. The direction is therefore an important point of comparison when planning the hike. As trail conditions may change, check them before setting off.

Village Character and Churches

The rural village centre lies at the foot of the hills. Its buildings are arranged mainly along a winding route shaped by building façades and boundary walls. At the entrance to the village centre, an imposing 15th-century residence dominates a small square. The four-storey building features façade decorations, and its top floor is designed as a loggia. Those interested in historic village settings will find a clearly visible connection here between the route, walls and a distinctive building.

The churches also offer contrasting features. The Church of San Giorgio is located above Origlio and can be reached via a picturesque staircase. Its façade is imposing and unfinished, with no plaster. Inside is the wooden Madonna della Nivola, dating from the 14th century. The Church of San Vittore Mauro contains a late Gothic fresco of Saint Sebastian from the workshop of the Seregnesi. Each church therefore offers its own architectural and art-historical details.

Green Spaces and Local History

An orchard with old varieties that have practically disappeared today is located on Matterone Hill. The Crano biotope, meanwhile, is a natural depression that collects water from the surrounding wooded slopes and holds water at certain times. These two places show different aspects of the landscape around Origlio, where nature is not limited to the lake.

Parco del Castagno covers two hectares. Its dining area is equipped for barbecues; the playground has swings, towers, movable bridges, a draughts board and a Nine Men's Morris game. For a different kind of outing, the Schimmel riding school offers guided rides and horse hire with an accompanying guide. Check availability before your visit.

The history of the village also includes winegrowing and cheesemaking, particularly the production of Stracchini, a soft cheese. Origlio also had a tradition of stucco workers, linked to the phenomenon of the “artists of the lakes”. In past centuries, these craftspeople emigrated across Europe, continuing until the early 19th century. This cultural history complements the trails, churches and natural areas with a glimpse into earlier craft and economic traditions.
