Bedano lies in the central part of the Vedeggio Valley, close to major transport routes and Lugano. The village is defined by historic church buildings, trails with a history of their own, and the Ciöss Castegna chestnut grove. These offer different starting points for planning a trip—from art and architectural history to routes and woodland scenery.
Oratories and historic traces
The Oratorio di Santa Maria is listed as a national monument and is considered Bedano’s oldest building. It was built between 1365 and 1367; inside are fragments of 15th-century frescoes. The oratory can be visited in the centre of Bedano.
The Oratorio di San Rocco was built in 1570 as protection against the plague. In 1597, it was extended by adding a nave. After restoration in 1999, it reopened to the faithful on 13 June of that year. The dates show how the building was altered at an early stage and later repaired; the reopening is a historical event.
Another chapel is La Madonnina della Valle Barberina, built in the forest above Bedano. It was inaugurated and blessed on 19 September 2010. Bedano is also home to the medieval castle ruins of Casletto, which are listed in the 2026 Ticino Cultural Property Inventory.
Crafts and the local economy are also part of the village’s history. A cooperative cheese dairy began operating in Bedano in 1890. The Gruppo Creativo Bedano revived the former work of the tilemakers: it shaped roof tiles and bricks and fired them in a kiln at 1050 °C. These connections add other aspects of life in the village in the past to its church and architectural history.
Historic trails and different routes
Bedano is one of the eleven municipalities along the Strada Regina theme trail, which runs from Gambarogno to Caslano. The trail is more than 30 kilometres long in total; this length refers to the entire route, not to a section in Bedano. The Strada Regina follows official trails in the cantonal hiking network, is recognised as an official theme trail and has its own signage. It is also included in the Swiss Inventory of Historic Routes.
The Strada Regina is connected to the Via del Ceneri, the Via Storica del Montecenerino and the Via Francisca del Lucomagno. It partly follows the same route as the Via Francisca del Lucomagno. Along the entire Strada Regina, visitors encounter chestnut groves, historic villages and houses, churches, and fortifications. The trail thus provides a broader regional context for the historic route of which Bedano is a part.
Other trail connections lead uphill from Bedano to Arosio: an official trail there was restored in 2018. In 2019, a connection between the Bacino vecchio and Prematt areas was also restored. Bedano’s forest road, also known as the fire road, was built in 2000 and is valued by many people as a recreational area.
For mountain bikers, the Monte Tamaro Bike route is a point of interest in its own right. It follows a singletrack through the forest down to Bedano on the valley floor. On some sections, mountain bikers have to push their bikes. This specific route condition is worth factoring into your plans if you are considering the trail.
Woodland scenery and Ciöss Castegna
Bedano’s foothill belt is characterised by woodland; there are only a few open green spaces near the mountain settlements. Landscape protection also varies by area: Zone PA1 protects the landscape context of the village centre, while Zone PA2 protects the setting of the Riale Balberina stream.
The restored Ciöss Castegna chestnut grove is a 2.5-hectare recreational area open to the community. Facilities include tables, benches and information boards. Widely spaced fruit-bearing chestnut trees define the grove, alongside a meadow that is grazed and mown annually. This open woodland habitat provides a home for birds that depend on such conditions. Chestnut gathering is also open to everyone there.
The trail and landscape features differ in focus: the Strada Regina connects Bedano to a longer historic route, while Ciöss Castegna is a specific chestnut grove in the village. The forest road and the trails to Arosio and between Bacino vecchio and Prematt add further named trail connections to this overview.
