Rovio brings together frescoes, cobbled old-town lanes and views across Lake Lugano towards Monte Generoso. This town in Ticino, part of the municipality of Val Mara, can be explored through a range of interests: church art, contemporary photography, regional food and drink, and routes into the surrounding countryside each offer a different focus.
Church art and historic townscapes
San Vigilio dates from the first half of the 11th century and is an example of Romanesque architecture in the Sottoceneri region. The church stands on a secluded hill with panoramic views to the west of Rovio. Its apse is entirely decorated with frescoes from the first half of the 13th century, which show a strong Byzantine influence. The building and its painted decoration therefore belong to different periods.
The parish church of Santi Vitale e Agata also dates back to the 11th century. Its furnishings include an altarpiece depicting the Crucifixion, painted by Giovanni Carlone in 1614. The Oratory of Madonna del Carmelo, also known as Santa Maria Assunta or Gesiola, was founded in the late Middle Ages and extensively remodelled during the Baroque period. It also has a 15th-century fresco of the Nursing Madonna. Together, these buildings and works of art show how religious architecture and furnishings in Rovio evolved over many centuries.
Further traces can be found in the old town and in individual buildings. Roman graves can be seen in the town centre, where they were reused as bathing facilities at the fountains. The old town preserves notable buildings opening onto squares and cobbled streets. The late Neoclassical Palazzo Bagutti was built in 1864 and has several rooms decorated with 19th-century paintings. Casa Carlone stands in Piazza dal Torc; between 1695 and 1700, Giovanni Carlone painted the interior of one of its rooms.
Photography and flavours of Ticino
CasaGalleria.ART adds contemporary photography to the area's historical attractions. This creative and exhibition centre presents, among other things, analogue works, street art, live works connected with augmented reality, and photographic compositions. By reservation, it also offers art-and-nature experiences, including a studio visit with the artist, an artist portrait, a workshop on night-time photography of flowers in the garden in Rovio, and special street-art experiences with Yuri Catania.
CasaGalleria.ART also offers the opportunity to enjoy an aperitif or lunch featuring seasonal regional produce and Merlot wines from the region. Vini Rovio offers a different kind of tasting: guided tastings of wines from Ticino, local cured meats and cheese are available by prior arrangement. They last about 90 minutes and are intended for groups of at least two people. The approximate duration and minimum group size can help you plan for this experience.
Views and routes into the countryside
From Rovio, views stretch across Lake Lugano to Monte Generoso; the surrounding area is characterised by lush vegetation. A short walk leads from Rovio towards Cascata del Botto, whose waterfall has a drop of 68 metres. The route also known as Sentiero Gianola runs between Rovio and the summit of Monte Generoso. The waterfall and summit therefore offer two different landscape destinations. Check route conditions before setting out.
