Bioggio brings together archaeological evidence and church art spanning several centuries. Those interested in the history of the area will find Roman traces, Christian places of worship, and works of art in churches and oratories. A nature trail, the Riale Roncaccio and seasonal leisure activities add further options to the cultural attractions for your stay.

Roman Traces on the Archaeological Trail

The archaeological trail in Bioggio, beneath the church square, includes Christian places of worship dating from the 5th century to the end of the 18th century. It is considered the first trail of its kind in Ticino. At ground level, the layout of a Roman structure with a caldarium has been reconstructed. In the municipal underground car park, the trail reveals part of the perimeter wall of the sacred area.

An underground section lies beneath the present forecourt of the Chiesa di S. Maurizio. There, the temple has been partially reconstructed with important architectural features, including columns and capitals. The Tempietto di Bioggio was relatively small and stood within a large square perimeter wall. It included ancillary rooms for ritual petitions and votive offerings. The public buildings with heated rooms and the temple are interpreted as part of a sacred complex with facilities for healing purposes.

The former residence of the Counts Rusca is now Bioggio’s municipal hall. The interior of the building can be visited during public opening hours. An Etruscan tombstone found in the Roman temple is also on display there.

Churches and Oratories: Architectural History and Art

The Chiesa di S. Maurizio was rebuilt in the 18th century in the neoclassical style over an earlier Romanesque building; only its bell tower remains. The nave features stucco work and marble altars. Some paintings on the walls and in the presbytery are from the school of Luini. Giuseppe Reina of Savosa decorated the vault with frescoes.

The Oratorio di S. Ilario was built between 1665 and 1670 over an 8th-century Carolingian chapel. Part of the Carolingian apse, with a window that illuminates the altar, survives at the eastern end of the choir. The oratory houses a 13th-century fresco of the Madonna and Child in the Staffieri Chapel, probably from the original chapel. The left side altar features a Crucifixion dated 1564; according to the inscription, it was commissioned by Antonello di Giovanni Maria de Advocatis de Biogni. The painting on the main altar depicts the Madonna, Saint Hilary and Saint Sebastian. Two works attributed to G. A. Petrini are also kept here: S. Ilario and Saint Helena Finding the Cross.

Nature Trails, Landscapes and Seasonal Activities

The Sentiero Didattico is an outdoor themed trail with information panels and interactive activities on biodiversity, geology and local history. The Aula nel bosco is open to families, tourists, hikers and sports enthusiasts. Those with a particular interest in the landscape and waterways can also learn about the Riale Roncaccio: the shallow stream is about 2.39 kilometres long and flows into the Vedeggio near the Mulini di Bioggio.

Several sections of the Strada Regina are still accessible on foot, offering access to landscapes and historical sites. Bioggio’s cultural programme includes various events throughout the year, organised together with sports and leisure clubs, including concerts and comedies. This makes it possible to combine sacred art and archaeology with nature and culture, without limiting your stay to just one kind of discovery.

At Giazz in di Pree, there is a natural and an artificial ice rink in winter, and a football pitch in summer. As availability depends on the season, check locally before your visit.
