In Taverne’s historic centre, the early medieval Chiesetta Santa Maria Maddalena and the 15th-century Casa Rusca stand opposite each other. Frescoes, an altar, coats of arms and the remains of the castle complex offer different clues to the area’s history. Taverne is a hamlet of the municipality of Torricella-Taverne in the canton of Ticino, in the Lugano district. Its cultural highlights can be seen in specific buildings; a protected amphibian pond and information about getting there add further perspectives.

The Chapel and Casa Rusca: Two Historic Highlights

The Chiesetta Santa Maria Maddalena is dedicated to Saint Mary Magdalene and dates back to the early Middle Ages. Fragments of 18th-century frescoes survive on its façade, while inside there is a neoclassical altar from the same century. The chapel thus brings together early origins and later decorative features. Its façade and interior offer different art-historical points of interest.

Opposite the Chiesetta is Casa Rusca, also known as Casa San Carlo, a building dating from the 15th century. Its façade is decorated with the coats of arms of the Visconti, the Rusca and the twelve Swiss cantons. Inside are religious frescoes, including a 15th-century Madonna Enthroned. Compared with the chapel, it presents a different combination: a 15th-century building, coats of arms on the façade and religious paintings inside. For travellers interested in architecture and art history, this contrast offers a clear thread to follow as they explore the historic centre.

Castle Complex, Paths and Art

The late medieval remains of a complex closely linked to Castello di Santa Sofia in Bironico are located on Monte Barro. They lie about one hundred metres from the settlement in the municipality of Torricella-Taverne. The ruins of Castello di Taverne include the recognisable remains of at least one tower, a curtain wall, a well-preserved cistern and other rooms. A cistern is used to store water, bringing another type of structure into view alongside the tower and curtain wall.

Since 2014, the Associazione Castrum Tabernarum has been working to revive the old walls of Castello di Taverne and maintain the paths. If you would like to include the paths in your plans, check their current condition in advance.

The Museo d’Argine offers another cultural highlight. It promotes cultural and leisure events in memory of the artists represented along its art trail. Its responsibilities also include the careful long-term maintenance of the trail. If you would like to plan your stay around an event, check in advance whether one is scheduled.

Nature and Practical Planning

The Laciunz pond is protected as a breeding site for amphibians of cantonal importance. As ecological conditions and access rules may change, check the current situation before planning a visit.

An initiative by the municipality of Torricella-Taverne focuses on buying wine from the region or local producers. If you would like to include this in your travel plans, check the current purchasing options and conditions in advance.

Taverne-Torricella station has a P+Rail parking facility with 35 spaces. If you plan to use it, check availability before you travel.
