Caslano offers a marked circular trail on Monte Caslano, museums exploring fishing and local history, and activities on the Ceresio. The municipality is in the Lugano district of Ticino, near the Italian border. Monte Caslano, also known as Sassalto, defines the town; much of its perimeter is surrounded by the lake. These themes offer different ways to plan your trip: nature on the mountain, culture in museums and the town centre, or time by the water.

Monte Caslano and paths along the Ceresio

The Monte Caslano peninsula is protected by the Swiss Confederation. The recommended circular route follows a marked path, with around 15 information panels along the way. The circuit, which follows the mountain’s perimeter, takes about an hour and a half. This makes it easy to set aside a specific amount of time for the walk. The landscape includes deciduous forests, chestnut groves, a hop-hornbeam woodland, dry meadows and pioneer vegetation. Around 600 plant species and 150 moss species have been recorded on Monte Caslano.

Another type of route is the accessible Giro lungolago Agno–Caslano. It runs along the shore of the Ceresio, also known as Lago di Lugano, from Agno to Caslano and ends at the lakeside square. The routes therefore offer different experiences: a circular walk on the mountain, with an approximate duration and information panels, or an accessible lakeside route between two towns.

Local history and museums

Caslano offers cultural tourism, with religious monuments and historic buildings. According to tradition, the original town centre developed around a Romanesque castle in the area of today’s Via Riale and Via Stremadone. The Chiesa parrocchiale di San Cristoforo is on Via Chiesa. Materials from the tower on Sassalto, which was demolished in 1640, were used to build the parish church and its bell tower. Villa Mainini-Ferretti at Piazza Lago 50 is listed as a cultural property.

The Museo della Pesca covers fishing from prehistoric times to the present day. Six exhibition rooms explore fishing and fish species found in rivers and lakes; boatbuilding is also among the topics. The museum is a 20-minute walk from the Caslano stop. Small boats can use the museum’s landing stage, which is a few minutes’ walk from Caslano’s landing point. Caslano railway station is on the metre-gauge Lugano–Ponte Tresa railway line (FLP), between Lugano and Ponte Tresa.

A permanent exhibition of the Museo dell’apparecchio fotografico e cinematografico is housed in the municipal library. The 650 objects represent the history of photography and cinematography; admission is free. For specific visit plans, check the latest information on routes, access and admission.
