Three distinct themes are at the heart of an exploration of Giornico: the old village centre, Romanesque churches, and museums with their own architectural and historical focus. Giornico is a municipality in the Swiss canton of Ticino and the capital of the Giornico circle in the Leventina district.

Giornico’s Village Centre and History

The old village centre consists mainly of stone houses. In the Inventory of Swiss Heritage Sites (ISOS), it is classified as a site of national importance. The historic centre therefore forms a focus in its own right, alongside the individual churches and museums: the architecture of entire houses shapes the impression of the place.

Two events from different periods are also part of Giornico’s history. The Battle of Giornico, also known as the Battaglia dei Sassi Grossi, took place on 28 December 1478 in connection with the conflict over control of the Leventina. Another historical point of reference is the hill of the Chiesa di Santa Maria del Castello: it probably belonged to a castle destroyed by the people of Uri in 1518. The cautious attribution of the hill to the castle is important.

Romanesque Churches and Their Architectural Features

The Chiesa di San Nicolao was built in the 12th century and is considered the oldest Romanesque church in the Leventina. It is classified as a national monument. Its crypt is divided into three naves and has eight columns with carved capitals. Their decorations feature fantastic animals as well as plant and geometric motifs. The number of naves describes the layout of the space, while the capitals reveal the variety of decorative motifs.

The Chiesa di Santa Maria del Castello offers a different architectural perspective. It has two parallel naves, built in different phases. The left choir contains frescoes from the first half of the 15th century and a Gothic inscription dated 1448. Here, phases of architectural development and datable works of art come together. By contrast, the crypt of San Nicolao draws particular attention to its columns and capitals. Those interested in Romanesque architecture will therefore find distinct, clearly identifiable features in the two churches.

Two Museums with Distinctive Character

The Museo di Leventina has a particularly rich and significant collection of objects, artworks and historical documentation. Visits are possible at any time by reservation. So plan your museum visit around a reservation and check the visiting arrangements before travelling.

The Museo La Congiunta brings together sculptures by artist Hans Josephsohn, created between 1950 and 1990, and an extremely minimalist building by architect Peter Märkli. Built in 1992, the reinforced-concrete building lies north of the village of Giornico, between the Ticino River and the railway line. Here, the sculptures and the building’s design are equally central; the collection described at the Museo di Leventina, by contrast, also includes historical documentation and objects. The Museo La Congiunta is open to visitors all year round. The key can be borrowed from the osteria; since local arrangements may change, it is advisable to check the key handover arrangements before arrival.

Circular Route and Surroundings

Another option is the Un giro a Giornico circular route, which is suitable for families and children. Check local trail conditions before hiking. Giornico is surrounded by vineyards and chestnut woods.

When choosing a stay in Giornico, you can first consider whether to focus on the village centre and its history, the churches’ architectural features, the museums or the circular route. The information about reservations and borrowing the key provides practical points for planning; for the churches and village centre, the focus is on the historical and architectural features described above.
